Social democracy and democratic socialism are two distinctly different philosophies. The owners of massive private wealth long for a type of socialism? What, so they can share their wealth?
The Economist is intended for a highbrow, well-educated, upper-class audience, and it shows. Most of its writers (who don't attach their names to articles, but rather hide behind pseudonyms or don't give a name at all) are young and fresh graduates of Oxbridge. Because of the serious tone of the magazine, readers may be deceived into thinking they must be experienced and distinguished journalists. Therefore, the magazine steers clear of vulgar libertarianism, but tends towards espousing free markets and privatization as a solution to almost every problem. Having said that, The Economist staff are by no means free-market fundamentalists; they just have a strong bias towards market solutions, though they also support state intervention for some things (like healthcare). On foreign policy, they have a mixed record and notoriously were chickenhawks when it came to the Iraq War, a position they later regretted.
Despite all this, their highly liberal positions on social policies and rational opinions when it comes to science mean a left-leaning reader can peruse the magazine without their head exploding. Indeed, the magazine, oddly enough, has a small cult following among radical leftists, much like Al Jazeera America does.

You think young idealist intellectuals write for long at a publication owned and controlled by the Economist Group if they are not protecting private wealth?Social democracy and democratic socialism are two distinctly different philosophies. The owners of massive private wealth long for a type of socialism? Way to deflect. Try rereading the source and see young idealist intellectuals ( not rich people) write for the publication. Also note the bold print I added.
You think young idealist intellectuals write for long at a publication owned and controlled by the Economist Group if they are not protecting private wealth?
You think anyone not considered a free market fundamentalist is a socialist? FFS, you people are willfully ignorant.
Its about democracy not happiness. Why are you dumb arses focusing on Norway ? All of Scandanavia,Canada, Australia and um Uruguay is rated higher.

US in at 21. Norway number 1 again. Western Europe leads the way.
The index, which comprises 60 indicators across five broad categories—electoral process and pluralism, functioning of government, political participation, democratic political culture and civil liberties—concludes that less than 5% of the world’s population currently lives in a “full democracy”. Nearly a third live under authoritarian rule, with a large share of those in China. Overall, 89 of the 167 countries assessed in 2017 received lower scores than they had the year before.
NK rated at 1 and Norway 9.something.Sort of rings true.
Democracy is under pressure.

Its pretty much the same everywhere. Those other countries aren't being pulled apart at the seams by narcissistic, party-first zealots on both ends of the spectrum, as we are.
And that has what to do with this index ?https://www.economist.com/blogs/graphicdetail/2018/01/daily-chart-21

It must be nice to be able to spend all your money on things you want instead of a military to defend yourself from threats like Putin as the US does it for them.

How fuckling dumb are you assholes?
Trump is killling this country & you dipstick play semantics.
This from the WaPo: "I often hear people argue that the United States is a republic, not a democracy. But that’s a false dichotomy. A common definition of “republic” is, to quote the American Heritage Dictionary, “A political order in which the supreme power lies in a body of citizens who are entitled to vote for officers and representatives responsible to them” — we are that. A common definition of “democracy” is, “Government by the people, exercised either directly or through elected representatives” — we are that, too."
He has opted to allow more pollution of our air & water, more dangerous workplaces, taken us backward on global warming, pissed off every one of our allies, picked a trade war with Mexico & Canada, trying to start a nuclear war with NK, Mocked our intelligence agencies, mocked our veterans, trashed every preceding President, Lied every fucking day of his term in office, restarted the nuclear arms race. You are a fuicking idiot. WE are a representative democracy and a consitutional republic.Good. The U.S. is a Constitutional Republic.

You say something as stupid as “Trump is destroying this country” and then try to pretend that others are ignorant? That’s rich.
Democracy is a self-limiting disease.https://www.economist.com/blogs/graphicdetail/2018/01/daily-chart-21
