Along the way the two parties convinced the voting populous to base their votes on one or two social wedge issues, after they accomplished that, there was nothing to stop them from doing whatever they wanted.

They have been using the "culture war" to divide us for a couple decades, and a divided people are easy to control.

You do realize that our choices have not exactly been all that shit hot? And it's been that way for quite some time IMHO. It's like you get kicked in the balls with somebody's left foot or right foot, not really much of a difference.

Aside from that, most people have quite a few things to deal with in their personal lives, like a job, home, bills, family, kids, with all the challenges that come with all that. Not a lot of time or energy to get too involved with politics, unfortunately. And as I said, neither side is doing very well at resolving all the problems this country has collectively or individually.

I’d say social issue conflicts, a tug of war between secular and fundamentalist Christian (evangelicals) values.
