Under the mantle of official authority, many people are willing to do things that they would never contemplate as private citizens. Government prosecutors routinely proffer false evidence in order to gain convictions, and law enforcement personnel exempt themselves from the laws they enforce under the guise of "professional courtesy." This is one reason why the government should always be kept on a short leash.
