Because the people will get taken in by advertising, and for advertising you need money. So it doesn't matter what they do, as long as they can advertise enough that you vote for them.

If the system of voting were changed to PR, then there would be more parties, who would fight against this. The two main parties don't see the need, because they both benefit from this.
