Paul makes a lot of sense in fundamental criticism of how things are. But since the 1930s huge expansion of government, a great many people look to big government as the entity which is supposed to solve all their problems in life. Leftwingers know that Paul's libertarian beliefs are just something the majority won't support - he represents a "poison pill" candidate that they hope will get nominated so that they will win the election in 2012.

This should be in the ‘Conspiracy Theories’ forum.

Actually, that would make sense if you could actually find evidence that leftwingers are intentionally trying to do so.

If they were, it would backfire on them.

Remember the 2000 Michigan primary, when a bunch of Democrats came out in an open primary and voted John McCain for no other reason than to spank then Gov. Engler? Yeah, McCain crowed about his victory, but the end result was that hard core Republicans tuned him out and he didn't win anothe primary after that.

In this case, you could have a huge amount of Democrats voting for Ron Paul in an early, open primary, but that would be fairly obvious and would just cause a reaction against him.

Poison pill candidates just get the rank and file to gather around someone who is viable. Such as when Pat Buchanan won in NH in 1996, that just boosted Bob Dole.

Same placing as 2012 if he's the candidate.

All too true. The notion that any political group invested in the status quo would 'hype' Paul is quite naive.

I agree. Never underestimate the ability of Americans to be manipulated.
