None of us have any idea what happened before.
You all are just assuming that it was because he was captured.
Maybe he ate something extremely spicy that he was not used to and caused that reaction.
It could be any number of things as to why.
We won't know unless he comes forward and wants to tell us all what really happened.

You can't fight against heavy weaponry with small arms, and if they had, the sailors would have been killed instantly or faced court martial.
Thye were terrified with good cause: They were facing the very real possibility of being tortured, executed as spies, or imprisoned for the rest of their lives.
