A POLITICO/Morning Consult poll from late February underscored the volatility of the situation — and the current disincentive for either party to cave: Asked whom they would blame if the U.S. defaulted, a plurality of voters, 37 percent, said they’d hold both parties equally responsible. Another 30 percent said Democrats would be most to blame, while 24 percent said the GOP would be.

Meanwhile:

So, what cards are Biden holding in his hands in this poker game?

We spend more money than the government takes in because both Democrats and Republicans are really only one party. The Party of Big Government. The Democrats are the bat shit crazy branch and the Republicans are the more moderate branch. Both have been a fiscal disaster for this country.

Democrats are blatant about being fiscally irresponsible and make no excuses for being idiots. Republicans claim to be fiscally responsible but almost always go along with the Democrat big government policies.

That is the reason that Federal government spends as much money each year as the GDP of all but two more countries on the face of the earth and is $32 trillion in debt.

Shame!

Easy enough to raise the Debt Ceiling
Been done for over a hundred years.

Republicans refuse to do it

I presented links from places other than the US message board.
So why are you asking the question?

Did we have this issue last year when the GOP wasn't in power? Nope. Suddenly they are...and we have this problem.

So yep...it's on them.

Feel free to post your links again stating whatever crazy alternative universe you inhabit.

I think that WRONGwinger's last statement is typically disingenuous. Repubs are going to raise the debt limit because it is always done, a no-brainer. They are just asking the Dems to cut back on the outrageous spending that they are so well known for. Do you really have a problem with fiscal responsibility?

That is where you lose

WHY are Republicans tying spending cuts to raising the debt ceiling? Because they know they can’t do it as part of the normal budget process
If Dems concede to Republican extortion now, they will have to deal with it EVERY YEAR (unless a Republican is President)

This is just another way for Republicans to rule from a minority

Thanks for your surrender. It's about time you guys accepted facts.

The only time we ever try being fiscally responsible is when there is a Democratic president and a Republican Congress. No other combination works.

They can't do it during the normal budget process because Democrats refuse to cut spending. That's why we are where we are at.
