The UN was created in 1947(?) to solidify the entente victory of ww2 and to guarantee the borders of Israel. Today, 70 years later, it is still controlled by its security council, the leading ww2 entente nations. The purpose of the UN is the keep enforcing the current division of the world, that is dictated unilaterally by the 5 members of the Security Council.

But in the 21st century, it has become apparent, that nation states are loots, at least in the categoric sense. So the actual power circles that control the nation states are the ones that matter, and this may be on the move.

Israel is not as happy with the UN as it used to be, neither is the USA.

What power shifts do you observe or speculate on that control the UN today and in the future?

It's made itself a bad joke, and the U.S. should just dump it and quit funding it. It's majority is made up of corrupt vermin, criminal syndicates, dictators, and Islmao-Land murderers. At least move it out of the U.S. so we don't have to give the scum diplomatic immunity on our soil.

Unless and until something really radical happens in the five "veto power" nations, there will be no power shift in the U.N. Of those radical changes, none of them seems eminent; however, the two big ones that need to happen for any real power shift to happen in the U.N. are: the PRC becoming a capitalist republic and Russia ceasing to be an autocracy.

I'm suspect the UK and France will merely wait-out Trump's "reign" to see whether the U.S. will return to being sane and trustworthy. That said, if it doesn't, the U.S. could plausibly find itself "going it alone" in the U.N.

Rush Limbaugh characterized the U.N. security council as the "bar scene from Star Wars". The sacrifices the U.S. made two World Wars and Korea and Vietnam not to mention the Mid East is what keeps the U.N. in business but the hypocrites don't appreciate it. Notice that the symbol of capitalism in the entire world, the World Trade Center was the target of radical crazy hate filled terrorists but not the U.N.? U.N. hypocrites enjoy the benefits of capitalism in the most diverse City in the world and then they vote against U.S.interests because the U.S. used to be a pushover and a prime target for extortion. As of 2017 there is a new Sheriff in town and things might change.

Very interesting. I think that if the USA leaves the UN, then the UN will become a goon of France and the U.K., the secondary powers in the security council. Would be interesting to see.
