...The politician should be made to walk through city streets at night without bodyguards. If they make it then can stay on the job, if not, well, that's the burden of leadership. 
Does anyone have any doubt at all if Presidents had to walk through DC streets sans protection they wouldn't make it? Would that really be so bad? If a leader isn't leading, don't their troops usually 'replace them?' Even 17th century pirates could vote to replace a bad captain. Isn't that pretty just and fair? If you suck as a leader and are getting your people killed shouldn't you be on the way out as well?
Japanese would commit ritual suicide if they lost their forces trust and confidence. Hell even modern Japanese have commited suicide for decisions that got people killed like an airliner executive years back. So what's it say about us when instead of getting rid of walking fuckups we let em stay on the job, and they don't even have honor-enough to do their country a favor and open a vein or two?
