What did Miguel Almaguer of NBC do wrong to be sent down the memory hole?

What are the verified facts surrounding an incident that is still being uncovered? More concerning, who determined and verified Aguilar’s content to be inaccurate? Worse, when was the last time a reporter was suspended or punished for inaccuracy? If that is the case, most of the journalism pool would be suspended.

All you did was parrot NBC’s response with authoritative bullet points that do nothing but open up more questions; particularly of NBC.

What’s next for Aguilar; re-education camp? Incentive for himself and family to tow the company line?

NBC News has suspended one of its journalists over a controversial report which bolstered right-wing conspiracy theories about the violent hammer attack on Paul Pelosi.

Miguel Almaguer, a correspondent for NBC’s Today show, came under fire earlier this month when he suggested that the husband of House Speaker Nancy Pelosi was not in danger during the assault that left him hospitalised

[There is no difference between the GOP non necessary lies about what happened and what Almaguer did. That was not professional, responsible journalism. Journalism has a code. He broke it . He was suspended. Fired? We shall see. Other journalists get suspended or fired for similar reasons.

You behave as if you are a fan of Almaguer. I would bet not. What you are complaining about is that you DEMAND that what he wrote be the truth, regardless of cameras, the police and prosecutors saying otherwise ]

[ The verified information came from the attacker himself and the police cameras. He confessed the whole thing ]

DePape told authorities that he entered the
Pelosis’ home on a “suicide mission,” looking for the Speaker with intent to kidnap her, hold her hostage and break “her kneecaps” if she “lied.”

The indictment was filed by U.S. Attorney Stephanie Hinds in U.S. District Court - Northern District of California San Francisco. DePape, 42, a fringe activist drawn to conspiracy theories is in custody.

The charges supersede those in an earlier federal complaint that was filed Oct. 31.

The court documents offer some new details from the middle-of-the night attack that awoke Paul Pelosi while he was sleeping and his wife was in Washington.

When two SFPD officers, with their body-worn cameras activated, responded to the Pelosi home in Pacific Heights, they asked what was going on, DePape told them, "everything is good." An officer instructed DePape to drop the hammer he and Pelosi were struggling over, to which DePape responded, "ummm nope."

DePape then began forcefully swinging the hammer at Pelosi, the indictment said.

Paul Pelosi's recollection of the events mirrors DePape's confession in key ways, according to the indictment. He said he was awakened by DePape who was asking where his wife was. The document states in a subsequent search of a backpack in DePape's possession, law enforcement found, among other things, a roll of tape, white rope, one hammer, and one pair of rubber and cloth gloves and a journal. SFPD had also found zip ties in the Pelosi residence. DePape told law enforcement he was going to use the zip ties to restrain Mr. Pelosi, "so that he could take a nap."

DePape told investigators he used, "full force" on Mr. Pelosi and that Speaker Pelosi was on his target list.

It was determined in a subsequent interview with DePape on Oct. 30, that the hammer did not belong to the Pelosi's.

A review of electronic evidence seized from DePape by law enforcement shows that DePape researched the Pelosi residence as recently as Oct. 26, two nights before the attack, according to the document. He allegedly researched the home address of another individual on his target list.

We’re supposed to assume that Almaguer simply made up that very specific description of what happened, and assume that the spun story must be the truth.

Simple solution is to release the body cam footage as SFPD does in almost all such cases.

Where and when has Aguilar type suspension occurred for getting facts wrong or raising alternative possibilities? This has nothing to do whether I am a fan of his or not. It has everything to do with punitive action while all of the facts are still being verified as well as unknown answers to questions being raised.

" for getting facts wrong or raising alternative possibilities?"

Is the job of a journalist to look for "alternative possibilities" or to investigate thoroughly and then report on the findings?

I have been watching news for quite some time and do not remember any journalist even proposing that there might be some alternative possibilities instead of reporting on the facts as they found them.

Show a journalist who got suspended for violating these things by simply reporting a story?

He made the mistake of reporting a factual story about Pelosi's hubby.

Wrong. Almaguar did NOT say that Pelosi was not in danger. What he said was:

The 82-year-old did not immediately declare an emergency or tried to leave his home but instead began walking several feet back into the foyer toward the assailant and away from police.”

Nowhere here does he say that Pelosi was not in danger and if this is what NBC claims and is the reason they suspended him then they themselves are guilty of unprofessionalism.

Who did he cite as a source? I know he didn’t just make that shit up; someone told him this.

[ Facts never necessary. And so few like to do research to find out the why someone was suspended. Bad mouth Democrats is the first instinct ]

  • Miguel Almaguer, 45, a correspondent with NBC's Today show has been suspended after he reported inaccurate information on Paul Pelosi's attack
  • Almaguer compiled a report suggesting Nancy Pelosi's husband was not in any danger when police arrived at the couple's San Francisco home
  • He also went on to state how Pelosi walked back towards his attacker
  • The report, which aired November 4, was later found to be inaccurate as it contradicted claims made by both prosecutors and police

Truth and video contradict police and wray/garland

[Now add this to what Almaguer failed to say in his report]

"Almaguer's account of the events contradicted official statements made by police, who said officers arrived to find Paul Pelosi in a struggle with assailant David DePape, who struck him in the head with a hammer. NBC News retracted Almaguer's report and removed video of it, saying the piece was "removed from publication because it did not meet NBC News reporting standards."

The retracted report from Almaguer fueled public speculation that DePape might have been an acquaintance of Paul Pelosi. DePape allegedly told police, however, that he was on a "suicide mission" and planned to target Nancy Pelosi and other government officials, not Paul Pelosi."

[ Which only added fuel to the fire many Republicans had already started ]

Even as Republican leaders condemn the brutal assault on Speaker Nancy Pelosi‘s husband, other GOP figures are broadcasting a much different message on social media — at turns downplaying, mocking and trading in disinformation about the attack.

Trump Jr.'s and Higgins’ posts followed a deleted tweet from Elon Musk, the new owner of Twitter, that also gave credence to the same disinformation about David DePape, the 42-year-old perpetrator of the Friday morning attack on the Pelosis’ San Francisco home. DePape’s previous ties to a prominent nudist activist in that city appear to have inspired the false claims that continue to gain traction online among conservatives.

Was not true. Was not journalism. No journalist would want to post or say anything before first checking with the SF police and other sources .
It is all in the SFPD cameras, street cameras, etc and it contradicts what Almaguer reported.

Allow NBC to conduct an internal investigation as to the issue. In time we will all have the results.

Again, what other journalist(s) received such punitive treatment for getting a story wrong? We keep coming back to this point. This is the core issue I have. Now, if the reporter knowingly presented false information as part of a political agenda like Dan Rather did in 2004 during the Presidential Election, then he should lose his job.

You are battering a worthless question. On purpose. In order to be right.

You are not right. Almaguer has not lost his job. He has been suspended pending investigation on a very WRONG reporting based on disinformation he did not care to check.

There is no point. It is not the core issue. You want it to be, but it is not, it will never be.

NBC is only saying the suspension is due to Almagauer “not meeting NBC News reporting standards.” You have listed Journalism standards on the assumed authority that those map to NBC News Reporting standards yet NBC has not articulated or listed those standards or the specific standard Almagauer violated. Further, what is the precedent or policy regarding suspension at NBC? Who else has been suspended? Who else has been suspended at other networks for violation of their reporting standards??

You are going to have to wait, very patiently, for the investigation to come to an end and for NBC to put out something about it.

:)

Why the wait? NBC made a specious statement with no substance to back it up. It’s their company and they can do what they want. They just look like they lack credibility with no back up or details. Credibility is a backbone of a media company.

As I said, someone told him this. He didn’t just make it up. He is quoted as saying:

“Sources familiar with what unfolded in the Pelosi residence…”

But more importantly, even if what Almaguer reported was not true, the fact remains that he did not say Pelosi was not in danger.

So, if this what NBC said in regards to Almaguer’s report, they themselves are guilty of faulty reporting. In other words, they issued a false report of an alleged false report.

Having said that, reporters do this sort of thing all the time. On scene, they report the facts as they are known at the time but they also report what witnesses and others say at the scene. That’s just standard journalistic procedure.

From where I sit, the things that “Sources familiar with what unfolded in the Pelosi residence…” said may or may not be true but as for Almaguer, I see no violation of journalistic ethics.
