What beliefs define a 21st Century American conservative?

Social Security works. It is not a scam or a ponzi scheme, it simply works. Not everyone has a defined benefit retirement or a 401 k, not everyone earns enough to save for retirement and even those who do and did got fucked when the stock market nearly crashed. It is a safety net and prevents senior citizens from living in abject poverty.

How long do you think the ponzi scheme will continue to work?

Keep in mind all funds go to the general fund and our government insists we fund it less.

Al Gore wanted all SS funds placed in a locked box, kept out of the hands of Congress; GWB wanted to eliminate SS and have everyone invest in private accounts. Neither prevailed, had Bush many many Americans would be in deeper financial trouble today.

what a fuck faced hypocrite you are.. for two years in a row now obie wan mac diddle has robbed social security of 110 billion dollars.. and you guys call it a tax break.. we'll see what you think when the fund is sucked dry.. blame that on Booooooooooooooooooooosh whydonchya?

“The originalism looks to the original public-meaning of the Constitution and its amendments at the time they were enacted. The meaning of the Constitution must remain the same, until it is properly changed. And it cannot be changed unilaterally by the courts, or even by courts acting in conjunction with other branches of government.” Professor Randy Barnett, in “Originalism,” p. 262.

I'm still reading this: http://randybarnett.com/nonoriginalists.htm

Great!

I always appreciate scholarship....but I'm not giving you another rep...you never say thanks.

I recommend the book I mentioned earlier, and the source of the quote above, "Originalism: A Quarter-Century of Debate," edited by Steven Calabresi...
...in which there are several interesting debates and opinions.

Well, I would have said thanks but this is not an easy read (I'm much more comfortable with books where I can reference points made on pages with small slips of paper - reading on the kindle or computer screens requires note taking).

Social Security is probably the biggest of all american government scams.

Old people would be a lot better of if they never had to pay into it and could just keep and invest their money on their own accord, but that's somehow immoral to liberals.
Liberals defend SocSec not because of a desire to help old people, but to protect their political power - it buys them votes from said old people, and it gets them money they can use to buy votes from others.

Not everyone has a defined benefit retirement or a 401 k, not everyone earns enough to save for retirement and even those who do and did got fucked when the stock market nearly crashed and some financial institutions too big to fail failed. It is a safety net and prevents senior citizens from living in abject poverty.

You understand if people didn't have to pay the taxes required for social security that they'd have more money right? You also understand that if americans were given a tax cut from social security being done away with, and then put those savings into a low interest earning account, that once they were seniors they'd have much more money than they get through social security, right?

A proposal that he, and everyone else, knew would never be passed into law by Congress.

GWB wanted to eliminate SS and have everyone invest in private accounts.
This is either a lie, or abject ignorance. Bush proposed no such thing.

Be honest:
If they were guaranteed to be voted out of office for doing so, do you think that the liberals that support SS would continue to do so?

It's rather small minded to presume that opposing SocSec and Medicare equates to an opposition to helping the needy.

Do you know anyone who put money into it, who is at retirement age, that is not receiving benefits?

Anyone?

Are you sure it doesn't work?

If you give me $50 today, and it 30 years I give you $60 in payback and you could've earned back $100 in a savings account, you would view that as getting screwed, right?

Yes, 100% certain it doesn't work, 100% certain of the exact opposite actually.

Both parties played the lock box dance. WITH THE OPPOSITE SIDE BLOCKING.

But Al gore and the democrats didnt mind taxing said SS for a second time.

What's the SS deduction? Nominally 6.25%?
If you invested 6.25% of your income from age 25 to 65, how much money would you have?
Likely a lot more than the pittance SS will pay.

Forgiven.

Bet your library has the book.

Wrong. murkins aren't smart enough to manage their own money. See housing bubble. Case closed.

What do they believe in and why are they so quick to attack other self described conservatives as RINO's?

Postscript: Upon reflection this thread limits conservative to the Republican Party; I know many self defined conservatives see themselves as Independents or Libertarian, so let the question be: What do 21st Century conservaitves believe (and skip the snarky second phrase).

"Conservative" is a loose term.

I'd like to think the Bill of Rights tho....

Ah yes - only the government is competent enough to handle the American peoples' money matters efficiently and effectively -- for proof, look how the government hanldes its own money!

There is no such thing as a "lock box" for social security. Where do you think the money would go? Under Obama's mattress?
And Bush's proposal was not to eliminate SS. You're lying, again.

No, I don't understand that. Maybe I'm cynical or your naive but if such were the case predatory capitalists (think Bernard Madoff) would leave many citizens with nothing. SS lasts for ever; explain to me how much money one would need to save for the two or more decades most will life past their retirement date?

SS is guaranteed; as we saw in October 2008 that ain't so with the financial services industry.

Mind if I add something here?

Article I, section 8...the enumerated powers.

Yeah, gov't guarantees are good as gold. Ask any Indian.

Conservatives want to maintain (conserve) the status quo, in as much as it means maintaining the benefits they receive under the current status quo.

The fear is that they might lose some or all of the power and/or wealthy that they've compiled, of which they feel deserving. They insist the status quo is not to blame nor the cause of any social ill, for if it were to change, so would their circumstances.

Others, who aren't part of the percentage that is reaping benefits with the current status quo want change that will give them some of the benefits formerly reserved for the elite, reserved for those in control.

I'm sure that there are some conservatives who are as you've described. There are loons on both sides; but I don't think that it's the majority. There are greedy, scumbag, crazy cons, just like there are liberals who still think that Socialism is a good idea.

I personally try to stay in the middle. If you do this, you can choose candidates (or whom you vote for) with objectivity. And maybe you are a moderate. And being angry at elites (from both parties), after the fiasco of 2008-that has crept into the last three years like a case of untreated genital herpes-is understandable.

Just something to think about: I think that most of us want more-or-less the same things, we just have different ideas of how to get there.

:eusa_angel: Peace be with you, and keep your chin up.

I got mine, screw yours.

The Democrat motto is:

"Gimme, gimme, gimme"

That's bullshit. The last two presidential elections, I've voted Democratic. And during that time, I've had 1-3 jobs, paid taxes, had health insurance (private).

I guess it's more fun to fight, or generalize. It's just like saying that all Republicans are greedy and wealthy...and I KNOW that's bullshit.

Don't be soooo silly.
