Unfortunately, we can't make low wage jobs worth more by declaration. The reason fast food work doesn't pay much is that we don't value it that much. Fast food is popular because it's easy and cheap. If it gets more expensive, people will consume less of it. And there will be less fast food work to go around. You might say that businesses owners should suck it up and just reduce their profits instead of raising prices. Some will. Some won't. Some can't.

Trying to dictate prices, in an otherwise free market, is a fool's errand. The market will flow around your dictates like a stream flows around a rock.

But, it will sound like free money to the rubes - so hell, might as well buy yourselves some votes.
