What are the alternatives to welfare? What do we do with those poor and less fortunate that can't care for themselves? We have millions of citizens that are unemployed, disabled, homeless, elderly, and children not old enough to work or care for themselves. We have citizens that can't afford proper health care, and rely on Medicaid to get help when needed. We have food pantries with empty shelves, shelters with not enough beds, and families living on the streets, some eating out of trash cans. We have tent cities erected by the homeless, and many of our vets are sleeping in parks and on sidewalks.
We hear and read the comments from those that say welfare encourages poverty and unemployment. We hear and read the comments that describe those on welfare as lazy, moochers, and baby factories. We also hear some say that if we ended welfare, it would force people to find jobs and support themselves. But, there's hardly ever any mention concerning where those millions of self-supporting jobs are.
So, what's the alternative to welfare? Do we allow citizens to starve to death, die from lack of medical care, die from exposure to the elements, and allow them to continue eating out of trash cans when they can find food in them? Do we close shelters and food pantries, and allow families with young children to continue living on the streets? Do we forget about being humane and concerned, and become hardened to the misfortunes of others? If not welfare, then what?
