There is a disturbing trend in television news reporting. It is a trend that contributes to the lowering of IQ’s nationally in the United States. That trend is the habitual use of former lawyers as television commentators. It is true that lawyers are used to being in front of people and have the gift of gab so to speak. But this turns viewers into de facto juries picked for their propensity to be not very bright and easily convinced to a lawyer’s point of view.

There is more information available to the average person than ever before, but people are getting dumber by the second. The whole point of a lawyer going before a jury is to use persuasiveness to take advantage of dumb people to produce an outcome that enhances the prosecutor’s or defense attorney’s reputation and bank account. Washington DC is filled with this sort of thing and the emergence of propaganda masquerading as actual truthful information is rampant. Too many lawyers destroy and distort truth, so it is unrecognizable to average people. Watch Will Cain on Fox News and that phony Andy Griffith Show “Opie” smile pasted onto his face.

No, we just need to get rid of cable news.

We just pulled the plug on our cable TV. Best decision in years.

We both know cable news is here to stay. If we pass laws prohibiting the use of lawyers as commentators, that might work. We also need to get lawyers out of Congress.

Q: What do call a lawyer with an IQ of 50?
A: Your Honor.

Q: Why do they bury lawyers 10 feet under instead of 6?
A: Because deep down, they’re good people

Q: What do lawyers use for birth control?
A. Their personalities.

Q: What’s the difference between a lawyer and a liar?
A: The pronunciation.

I would like to see a world where law school is outlawed.

The trouble is ignorant people think lawyers are objective.

Lawyers are typical of the problem, but the problem is the acceptance of "advocacy" as a legitimate form of communication.

It was not so long ago that when a politician or lawyer or other "expert" in an important field came on the telly and expressed an opinion, it was a legitimate opinion, based on their knowledge, beliefs, and political stance. Because of this it was not that unusual for a partisan - Democrat or Republican - to state something that was out of line with their party's stance on the issue. But you knew that it was honest opinion, so for what it was worth it was somewhat reliable.

But this all changed about twenty years ago. I personally peg it to the OJSimpson trial, in which the American public was subjected to a solid year of supposedly intelligent, educated, honest people lying their asses off, night after night, while pretending to be speaking sincerely and factually. It had an impact. The lying lawyers in that case became a sort of folk heroes for their ability to lie and distort with a straight face.

Well, a lawyer is an ADVOCATE (in most cases), and it is understandable for an advocate to distort things - without actually lying - in order to present a case in its most favorable light. But this approach has metastasized and now infects almost everybody who ever gets a platform to speak publicly on any issues. Now EVERYONE thinks that it is OK, and even virtuous to speak as an advocate on all things large and small. That is, they don't even believe it themselves, but they think they are accomplishing some higher mission in life by spouting Talking Points that they have heard political leaders spouting.

We see it constantly on this very BBS, with the most egregious examples being the constant bad-mouthing of former President Trump. The Lefties on this board seem to revel in spouting disproven, bizarre, slanderous nonsense about Trump - I can't believe their even buy it themselves, but they keep repeating the same old bullshit, as though they were furthering some divine mission in life by doing so.

Go ahead an blame the lawyers if you like, but it's EVERYONE. Advocacy outside of a courtroom or a sales presentation is inappropriate and destructive.

Carry on.

I agree. They should not be allowed to give an opinion or any type of free speech. Great idea

^^^This.

I watch zero news. I read the news. I listen to a few podcasts. But I am 100% divorced from watching news. Not on cable (cuz I don't have cable), not on broadcast, not streaming, not a clip on YouTube or Rumble or BitChute.

Ok...99% divorced... maybe once a month I'll watch a clip of Tucker Carlson that someone links to here on USMB.

Will Cain is NOT a lawyer. Thank you very much, but get your facts straight! He went to law school but never was a practicing attorney. Have a nice day!
