Equatorial wave expansion of instantaneous flows for diagnosis of equatorial waves from data: Formulation and illustration

Abstract

This paper presents a method for expanding horizontal flow variables in data using the free solutions to the shallow-water system as a basis set. This method for equatorial wave expansion of instantaneous flows (EWEIF) uses dynamic constraints in conjunction with projections of data onto parabolic cylinder functions to determine the amplitude of all equatorial waves. EWEIF allows us to decompose an instantaneous wave flow into individual equatorial waves with a presumed equivalent depth without using temporal or spatial filtering a priori.

Three sets of EWEIF analyses are presented. The first set is to confirm that EWEIF is capable of recovering the individual waves constructed from theoretical equatorial wave solutions under various scenarios. The other two sets demonstrate the ability of the EWEIF method to derive time series of individual equatorial waves from instantaneous wave fields without knowing a priori exactly which waves exist in the data as well as their spatial and temporal scales using outputs of an equatorial β-channel shallow-water model and ERA-Interim data. The third set of demonstrations shows, for the first time, the continuous evolutions of individual equatorial waves in the stratosphere whose amplitude is synchronized with the background zonal wind as predicted by quasi-biennial oscillation theory.

1. Introduction Rossby waves, named after the seminal work of (Rossby, 1939), play a fundamental role in large-scale atmospheric and oceanic motions that affect weather and climate. An equally seminal work on Rossby waves is Yeh (1949), who discovered the downstream development mechanism of weather systems in the midlatitudes via the dispersion relation of Rossby waves. In the extratropics, more than 90% of wave fields at any given instance are in the form of Rossby waves. In the equatorial region, on the other hand, all types of waves can co-exist for a relatively longer time after their excitations owing to the much longer inertial time scale for horizontal motions near the equator. A theoretical as well as practical question is whether we can isolate these individual equatorial waves from the total wave flow field observed at a given instance, which is the subject of this study.

Should have gone to the original paper right off the bat. Rather than contradicting present climate science, this is just another paper that verifies and enforces what the scientists have been trying to tell us. That Anthony Watts gets it all wrong is just the what he does.

When you dig into the paper and look at their methods and models they prove that a very minute changes in magnetic wave frequency from the sun can totally change how atmospheric waves form at the equator..

The long term is gong to be interesting.. I will be watching with great interest.

All weather begins at the equator and moves out to the poles in a magnetohydrodynamic system that we are only beginning to understand.
For years they have been looking at the sun and wondering how the sun could be influencing our climate when the TSI shows so little variation (the reaction is fairly stable).

The Sun runs generally on an 11 year cycle of solar activity along with other cycles, and the Earth runs on THREE main cycles,

You have Milancovic Cycles partially right. The rest of your post shows a remarkable lack of logic.

Why you dumb jackass, you haven't a CLUE what I know. YOU CAN'T EVEN SPELL MILANKOVITCH RIGHT! You see, what your problem is Old Rock is that you have a whole lot of data, it is your PROCESSOR that is questionable! You need a new rubber-band.

Milankovitch cycles - Wikipedia

Milankovitch cycles describe the collective effects of changes in the Earth's movements on its climate over thousands of years. The term is named after Serbian geophysicist and astronomer Milutin Milanković. In the 1920s, he theorized that variations in eccentricity, axial tilt, and precession of the Earth's orbit resulted in cyclical variation in the solar radiation reaching the Earth, and that this orbital forcing strongly influenced climatic patterns on Earth.

Milankovitch cycles - Wikipedia

The older explanations of his theories all spelled his name as it is in the Wikipedia article. The modern articles use the phonetic spelling. But I would not expect anyone as ignorant as toobfreak to know that.

Old Crock can cut and paste.. as for scientific analysis, your about as ignorant as they come.. You really should change the rubber band in your computer...

Watts has more brains in his little finger than you have in your whole body...

Wave propagation.... not something you equate with climate, generally speaking. But here it is...

Magnetism and the Coriolis effect creates a conduit at the equator and drives changes in our climate globally.. This can be affected by SOLAR OUTPUT and minor changes in solar modulation (magnetic output) can have devastating effects on earth while not changing TSI (Total Solar Ir-radiance) because it affects wave formation at the equator... Its an interesting hypothesis..

Identifying individual atmospheric equatorial waves from a total flow field

From the INSTITUTE OF ATMOSPHERIC PHYSICS, CHINESE ACADEMY OF SCIENCES

"Owing to the opposite vertical orientation with respect to the plane of Earth’s rotation across the equator from the Southern Hemisphere to Northern Hemisphere, the equator serves as a waveguide that houses a zoo of all kinds of atmospheric waves propagating along the west-east direction, which are referred to as “equatorial waves”. Equatorial waves are generated from spatially non-uniform diabatic heating fields, including latent heating releases from convective storms. These equatorial waves in turn initiate and organize new convections as they propagate out of their genesis locations, triggering a new set of equatorial waves propagating both eastwards and westwards along the equator. As a result, equatorial waves play important roles in organizing large-scale circulation disturbances and regulating large-scale diabatic heating patterns in tropics."

Weird science: ‘the equator serves as a waveguide that houses a zoo of all kinds of atmospheric waves’

Once again the Sun becomes the primary driver of earths climate and everything they claim CO2 could drive is proven to be driven by....... (wait for it)

Something else...

LOL The sun has always been a driver of the climate. No one is denying that. Should the output change in either direction by 5%, the result would be catastrophic. However, in the last solar cycle, the TSI has been declining slightly, while the temperature has had the warmest years on record worldwide. However, the increase in GHGs has retained much more of the heat than was the case previously. And that is why we are seeing the record heat in the atmosphere and oceans.

Scientists like Jenifer Francis have been pointing out the connection between the actions of the atmosphere and the warming for a long time. And chaos theory has long pointed out the 'butterfly' effect. Nothing in this paper says that GHGs are not the primary factor in the present warming of this planet.
LOL..

You really should learn how to read scientific papers... You obviously have no clue about wave refraction, reflection and stacking.. or how they effect the system...

Rocks doesn't read...he is a parrot who only repeats...he is given papers and provided with the misrepresentation...he then goes forth and repeats whatever he is instructed to repeat as many times as he can in the hopes that he will convince some other dupe and add yet one more useful idiot to the fold.

Look, nobody here intends to give a full technical thesis of anything, who would want to read it on a general board mostly about politics? But for someone to get on here and critique others on how much they got right about something they cannot even SPELL, confusing a man's given Cyrillic name at birth with a physical process named after him in Western Science after the fact where the universally accepted phonetic spelling was adopted to avoid diacritics; to my knowledge, I have never seen the Serbian form of his name used in discussing the physical process, then to try to cover for it by trying label others as without "logic" or as "ignorant" just goes to show the entire problem with the Left------ As Albert Osborn rightly said in 1910: "Those who expose their undeveloped natures would of course not do it if they KNEW they were doing it! The tragedy of ignorance is ignorance of it." And while Osborn was speaking to the scientific mind in general, I have never read a more perfect wrap-up of the Left-Wing mentality.
