Was FDR the best President in American history?

Anybody who herds people into concentration camps simply because of their identity is automatically out of the running for "best president."

I agree. He was a Xenophobic egomaniac.

Reagan was against Medicare, Medicaid and Social Security. He was a true visionary. The first Republican with the "Die Quickly" policy.

Why would you rate Harding as a low ranking President? Just wondering what you guys know that I dont on that one.

You do realize that people lived long and healthy lives long before government ran any of those programs dont you?

second worst president by far. totally shitting on the consitution does not yield greatness.
#1 worst president is lincoln, easily.
Just had an odd thought. Would it possibly be a fair question to ask that Lincoln's assassination caused him to be viewed by many as one of the worst presidents ever, because he never finished the job of re-integrating the states and that was left to the terminal fuckup Andrew Johnson who wanted to punish the South, and did quite effectively through Reconstruction?

Just thinking out loud here, because although Lincoln's obvious violation of the constitution is a valid point on many areas, his plans may have been much better than what was carried out.

Just something to consider.

Lincoln was nearly as unpopular in the north as he was in the South. His re-election required troops at the ballot places and voter intimidation. Only his assassination opened the door to eternal popularity and deification.

harding was a great president for he undid a lot of what wilson did in his "return to normalcy" presidency. But his greatest achievement was choosing "silent cal" coolidge as his veep, who went on to be the reagan of the roaring 20's.
omg!

I can't believe someone seriously posted this. Are the Conservatives really that dense? Harding and Coolidge Great Presidents?

Got Depression?
You couldn't name 2 of the real causes of the great depression if you were spotted 1 and 7/8ths of em.

Just cause you hate capitalism doesn't make you right. Makes you an impoverished fool.
Absodamnlutely right
My bottom 5 consists of (in no particular order)

Wilson
Buchanan
Carter
FDR
LBJ

Harding was a great President for he undid a LOT of what Wilson did in his "Return to Normalcy" presidency. But his greatest achievement was choosing "Silent Cal" Coolidge as his veep, who went on to be the Reagan of the Roaring 20's.

Grant's admin was overly corrupt thanks to the spoils system and Civil War Veteran Pension issues. Most of this was solved by another great president: Chester A. Arthur who took over after the Garfield assassination.

What we need now is someone to help us recover from the New Deal and Great Society, and we have a chance to make it through this crisis that has been fundamentally caused BY these 'solutions' of previous crisis because they DID NOT END!

:clap2::clap2::clap2::clap2::clap2::clap2:

I would rank FDR at the bottom with Wilson and Lincoln, I would love to dig them up just to stomp their skeletons into a fine powdery substance I detest them so much.

:iagree:

No they didn't. Life expectancy was in the 60s.
Social Security at that time was called living with your kids. If you didn't have kids, or your kids hated your guts, you were out in the street.

not many of them did,

How Have Life Expectancy Rates Changed Over Time?

In the United States, the 1900s were marked by a rather low life expectancy. About half of all children born in 1900 were only expected to live to reach the age of 50. Today, life expectancy has changed dramatically, as the average person (of any sex) in the United States is expected to live to be about 77 years old.

Only a person operating under a condition of mental slavery to the state would imply that government is the root cause for the increase in life expectancy, thus ignoring all the advances in medical technology brought to us thanks to inventors, researchers and entrepreneurs.

When SS was instituted, the average life expectancy was males: 58, females: 62, age to begin collecting SS age: 65, it was a scam when it was conceived and it's become an even bigger scam as time has passed, doesn't matter though since it's currently unsustainable without major reform so the government worshipers are in for a rude financial shock whether they like it or not.

Before the Depression Social security was called "Planning for Retirement" - which a pretty fair number of working class people managed. You know; blacksmiths, butchers, carpenters, masons, damn the list of working people does get long, back when people mostly worked for a living. Before FDR and his Socialist programs began the process of bankrupting the country, both financially and morally.

Let us not forget that like Lincoln, FDR broke the system of checks and balances envisioned by the framers of the constitution. Where Lincoln ignored the balance between states and the federal government, FDR ignored the balance between the branches, as seen most graphically with his stacking of the Supreme Court. When the court "checked" his unconstitutional plans, he simply changed the number sitting no the court and appointed toadies to approve whatever he wanted. This destruction of the constitution is precisely why he was a president of the worst sort.

Both of you....imagine that you were POTUS and a state sends a militia to attack a federal military base. They kill soldiers and capture the military base. What do you do?

And if aliens were to like capture asteroids and hurl them at Delaware...

Please provide any evidence that any government social programs have done anything to improve life expectancy.

Given the times and the circumstances, I think any reasonable assessment would place Franklin Delano Roosevelt number one. A incredible financial meltdown, massive unemployment, bank failure, the rise of fascist thinking, and the war all give him top spot. Add America's and the world's golden age till Reagan started the destruction of the middle class and regulatory structure in the eighties, and no one is close.
