Re 'Jim Crow' laws, Lincoln in Illinois and most of the other midwestern states made theirs a lot tougher in the 1850's, making it impossible for black people to make a legal living, and in turn enslaved them via the device of arresting them and then renting them out to farmers and factory owners as 'criminal laborers'. They are also why you don't see any significant migration of blacks out of the south after the war ended and they were allegedly 'freed' by those wonderful noble Yankees. The fact is most Yankees were fighting to keep blacks in the south and out of northern states, is all. The modern idiocy is merely for political hackery, bashing the south for voting Republican in the face of demonization by northern Democrats and their racist agendas. They've relied on that gimmick for decades now, and can't survive without it.
