A prominent academic leader argued Thursday that White people’s life spans give them an unfair advantage in collecting Social Security.

Thomas LaVeist, the dean of Tulane University’s School of Public Health and Tropical Medicine, made the comments at Washington Post Live's "Health Equity" event. He was interviewed by Post reporter Akilah Johnson, whose beat is exploring "the effect of racism and social inequality on health."

LaVeist explained Social Security is the perfect example to demonstrate how structural inequity manifests in American society.

While he did not say that Social Security is racist in itself, the dean claimed it is impacted by "structural inequity."

"So we have a policy, we have Social Security program established in 1935," he said. "This program was established to help address poverty, that many people after retirement were not able to — to basically live."

LaVeist then suggested that if all other factors are hypothetically the same, White people in America will benefit more from Social Security because they tend to live longer than Black people.


Some things are so mind-bogglingly stupid that only a "professor" could believe them.....Also, I guess he did not notice the "paid into" part.

So what can the government do but start killing white people, right? This shit is amazing.

I don't see how it is not perfectly clear that Social Security is racist. First off, damn near everyone that works pays into Social Security. And many of them DIE before they are ever able to collect a cent. And most of them that do die, die when they children are too old to collect survivor benefits. And once someone starts drawing that Social Security check, well dying kind of ends that.

So, the higher the death rate of an ethnic group the less they get out of Social Security. So yeah, Blacks are getting shit. The death rate, which is the number of deaths per 100,000, for black males is 1,380. For white males it is 1,055. But hey, the white dudes are trying, their death rate has been trending upward, the black male death rate has been trending down. But Native Americans get seriously shafted with a death rate of 1,718. Evidently, the system was designed for women, and what is really funny, Asian and Hispanic females come out the best.

There is a lot to digest in that little graph. Much has been happening surrounding mortality in the last couple of years. But it is funny to hear from the right, claiming that Social Security is not racist when that has always been one of the primary arguments for privatization of Social Security, the racism.

Social Security is not going belly up. For decades social security took in much more money than it ever paid out. And even today, well it almost collects enough to cover the payments. Congress "borrowed" that excess, and now they pay interest on it. What they are upset about is losing that "excess" they got so comfortable taking.

Or, maybe if it is true it's because white people tend to work there whole lives and tend to have higher paying jobs at the end of their lives because on average while people have more ambition and a stronger work ethic which in turn leads to more social security payouts for them.
