UN talks nearing weak deal on climate

KARL RITTER, Associated Press, By KARL RITTER and MICHAEL CASEY, Associated Press | December 8, 2012 | Updated: December 8, 2012 4:02am

DOHA, Qatar (AP) — Bleary-eyed negotiators from nearly 200 countries haggled through the night over new draft agreements on emissions cuts by rich countries and aid for poor as United Nations climate talks spilled into Saturday.

The two-week conference was set to finish Friday, but as so often in the annual U.N.-led talks, negotiators struggled to reach an agreement, especially on money matters.

After all-night wrangling, the latest drafts Saturday lacked the strong commitments on climate action and financing by rich countries that poor countries had hoped for. But they did include a text on "loss and damage," a relatively new concept which relates to damages from climate-related disasters.

Island nations under threat from rising sea levels have been pushing for some mechanism to help them cope with such natural catastrophes, but the United States has pushed back over concerns it might be held liable for the cleanup bill since it is the world's second-biggest emitter behind China.

A final agreement from the talks was expected Saturday.

Countries plan to adopt a new climate pact by 2015. The Doha conference focused on side issues such as extending an existing emissions treaty for rich countries and increasing financing to help poor countries deal with global warming.

We would be better off with putting everything into R@D and research. Obama is already doing that with the development of the battery, etc. This is the fastest way to meeting our goals.

As I have stated multiple times, we are not going to avoid the consequences. It is too late for that now. Yes, we need to do massive R and D on getting off of fossil fuels. And we need to do major research on what we can expect from the results of the present warming. The new information concerning the effects of sea ice loss on the Rossby waves in the jet stream is one example of that kind of research. Forewarned is forearmed, if one is wise enough to understand the warnings.

We should be spending our R&D funds on space research to accomplish two things. The first is to be able to defend our planet from an asteroid strike which would be automatic death for the majority of humankind and the absolute destruction of civilisation.

The second is to get humanity off of this one rock we live on. We need to populate the stars to ensure Mans continued existence. Nothing that we do on Earth has the capacity to end us as rapidly as one asteroid strike can. Period end of story.

Gonna have to break the time barrier for that one....But that'd mean that anyone could check out of here at any point in time(?) and go somewhere else....Something that the current global power structure certainly could not abide.

Not claiming any conspiracy here, just pointing out the obvious natural political ramifications.

nobody cares.....we're going to all be fracking our asses off soon. Write it down........you heard it first from Sk00ks.

Those climate summits now are about as relevant as the community group navel contemplation gathering.......a place for k00k scientists to go for a week to fuck other k00k scientists.
