Why is he attempting go after Trump under federal law?

This is a fundamental misstatement of the charges.

Cohen committed the federal campaign violations, was charged, was convicted, and went to prison.

What Trump was indicted for was (allegedly) attempting to aid and or conceal Cohen violations by falsifying his business records to hide the money laundering. (At a minimum, there may be other crimes such as tax evasion, but we won't know that until more evidence comes into the public sphere.)

Trump isn't being indicted under federal law, he was indicted under Section 175.10 of the New York State Penal Code, Falsification of Business Records in the First Degree (Felony).

The 'other crimes' thing is what he's not talking about, yet.

Correct, smart move on his part. We are at the indictment/arraignment stage, not the trial stage. The Manhattan DA now has to turn over all evidence (incriminating and exculpatory) to the defense team. He is not required to layout how he would present the evidence at trial.

The next step is for (a) the defense to review the evidence and compare it to the indictment, (b) the defense makes their motions to dismiss and suppression of evidence, (c) the prosecution gets to then submit rebuttal filings, (d) then the Judge rules on the motions. If the case survives that then it goes to trial, unless the defense and the defendant look at the evidence, say "we're screwed, the got us" and changes to plea to guilty.

Yet that was the basic idea behind his indictment for allegedly falsifying Trump Organization business records which was to launder the money.

The prosecution will try to show:

• Weisseilberg, Pecker, Trump, and Cohen created a scheme to hide the payments to Daniels.
• Cohen took out a personal loan against his house with the understanding he'd be paid back after the election
• Cohen created a shell corporation
• The money was deposited in the shell corporation
• Daniels was paid from the shell corporation account
• After the election the Trump Organization issued checks for false invoices
• Trump signed the checks

That is money laundering.
