The idea that we need a media in this country in order to make sure that democracy functions well is pretty valid. The argument is that an independent media will make sure that the politicians are not doing anything dishonest and keep the people informed is essential for people making the BEST choice in the laws they want the government to pass. That seems plausable but wouldn't a media that purposely lies to the people be just as disastrous for democracy. They would simply misinform the people and the people would make their decisions based on the lies that they have been told to them by the media. It would just seem like we would have the same affect as a media that wasn't independent and free since in both scenarios the people will be misinformed and unable to make the best decision possible.
The other thing to consider is the fact that most of the 'liberal' media in this country has the highest concentration of registered democrats than in any other organization. How can we assume that the media is independent when people in the same party might conspire to protect each other and protect people in power who are of the same political party. I kind of wonder how independent the media really is when we can have a democratic president, democratic congress, and a democratic media. It would definately explain why so much of democratic scandals are underreported.
