Thousands Of Gallons Of Crude Oil Spilled Along California Coast
The leak sent an estimated 21,000 gallons of crude into a culvert that leads to the Pacific Ocean near Goleta.
A half-mile oil slick already formed along the coast by the time a woman reported crude fumes around midday on Tuesday; by the time officials shut down the pipe hours later, the slick expanded to four miles long and up to 50 yards deep.
"Plains deeply regrets this release has occurred and is making every effort to limit its environmental impact," the company said.
The Environmental Defense Center, based in Santa Barbara, said the spill occurred in "a sensitive and treasured environment" and that the impact is "devastating to watch."

Let's see, 8 X 10^8 divided by 1 X 10^4, that is 80,000 barrels a year.
Santa Barbara Oil Spill Ruptured Pipeline Was Badly Corroded At Break Site Fisherman Sues Owner
A ruptured pipeline in California that leaked over 100,000 gallons of crude oil along the Santa Barbara coast last month was badly corroded to a fraction of its original thickness, according to federal regulators. The preliminary findings were released Wednesday by the federal Pipeline and Hazardous Materials Safety Administration.
However, that pipeline spilled about 100,000 gallons in a day. Now that is roughly 2381 barrels of oil. That is a rate of delivery in one spot, of over ten time the amount leaked in that whole area. When we are talking about the damage done by an oil leak, it is not just the amount, but the area and rate of delivery that counts. That you try to make light of the damage done by the spill simply demonstrates how little you care for the environment or the people in it.

It shows what a bunch of hypocrites you AGW cult members are. You obcess over 20,000 gallons of spilled oil while one your cult leaders is flying overhead burning 1000 gallons of jet-A per hour. This has what to do with the topic in the OP? No one said anything like that.Ah yes, we should all beautify our beaches with 100,000 gallons of oil. Such an appealing idea. Ol' Walleyes really has a point here, and I am quite sure that the people who live near and use that beach fully appreciate his thoughts.

That 80,000 barrels per year is not all delivered at one point, nor does all of it end up on the beach. However, by soiling the beaches that the very rich use, it will get a very definite response. NIMBY^3

Plains All American, meanwhile, said it could take months to determine the cause of the spill and remove the broken stretch of pipeline. Before the rupture on Tuesday, there had been mechanical problems on each side of the break in the pipeline.
The Houston-based oil company had racked up 175 federal safety and maintenance violations since 2006, according to the Pipeline and Hazardous Materials Safety Administration.
The federal agency has ordered Plains All American to analyze what caused the spill. Regulators also ordered the company to drain the broken pipe and conduct other maintenance before it can resume pumping oil through the pipeline.
