I find it hilarious that anyone would choose the C-47 as the cargo plane that was the best. Here is why.

The DC-3 went into production in 1936. The C-54 went into production in 1942. That is only 6 years difference. Both are bring still flown somewhere on the Globe. But the C-54 was still in USAF as late as 1980.

The range for the DC-3 1600 miles. The range for the C-54 is over 4000. The top speed of the C-47 was 200 mph while the cruise speed of the C-54 is right around 220 mph.

The production of the C-47 ended when the production of the C-54 started in 1942.

The C-54 is still used as an air tanker for fire suppression. The C-47 never could pick up the load for that type of work.

The C-54 is pressurized while the C-47 isn't. History says that the C-47 was the goto bird for the Chinese Hump. In reality, the C-47 could barely make the flight and the crew had to be on oxygen. The bird that carried most of the load was the C-46 which was pressurized and had a higher altitude rating.

What replaced the C-54 was the C-118 which was a re-engined and stretched C-54. The DC-4 and DC-6.
