Slavery saved them from savagery. They knew they were better off on the plantation than their brothers left behind in the jungle were. They could have easily escaped into the American wilderness, but hardly any did. They knew that they could never make it on their own out there, but most Whites did.

So let's get this straight - progressive cry for "free education" for everyone yet decry anyone currently receiving a free education to be "slaves. Yes folks....progressives really are this f'ing stupid.

Not one college athlete was forced to play college sports. Not one. It was a voluntary decision to do something they love and in return they get a free college education, free books, free food, free housing, free medical care. It's a great deal.

Not in all cases. Both Thomas Jefferson and George Washington are examples. They inherited slaves (by law) and were not permitted to free them (by law). Some plantation owners were horrible, evil people. Some were not.

In 19th century America, slavery was basically tolerated if not embraced. In the early part of the century, particularly in the South the inferiority of the black race was a common theme in churches. God made them black because they were inferior and intended that they serve as slaves. Many people believed blacks were a lower order of humans.

When you're raised in a society where the need and rightness of slavery is taught in schools, churches, and by your own family, the chances are pretty good you will accept it. And thus it was in the South. And yes, plantation owners considered themselves Christians.
