Although there have been examples of heartwarming sportsmanship and camaraderie among athletes during the games:

Friends and competitors embracing after a hard-fought competition:


There have been, unfortunately, some instances of very regrettable behavior as well:

Trying (more than once) to take out a competitor:


Even bullying a teammate and compatriot to tears:


Not cool. If the Olympics are intended for anything, it's to show us our better selves and to revel in the ways in which the purity of sport transcends political animosity. Usually, the games succeed in that goal, but when they don't, it diminishes all of us.

The 'spirit' of the Olympic games is camaraderie and good sportsmanship. The fact of human nature, is to win.
 
The best defense I could think of was, at least they didn't dope in curling....
