The Rise of Unions

Unions have been on the rise for a while now but have been super-charged in the Age of Biden, who is the most pro-union president perhaps in history. Now, the VFX workers are unionizing at Marvel Studios.

Marvel VFX Workers Unanimously Vote to Unionize With IATSE

In a historic move, Marvel Studios’ visual effects workers unanimously voted in favor of unionizing with the International Alliance of Theatrical Stage Employees (IATSE) in an election held by the National Labor Relations Board (NLRB), the company announced Wednesday.

This marks the first time a unit of solely VFX workers has unionized with IATSE.

The Marvel Studios workers initially filed for the election on Aug. 7, and votes were cast and collected between Aug. 21 and Sept. 11. During the count on Sept. 12, all votes were in favor of unionizing with IATSE and zero were against.

“Today, VFX workers at Marvel Studios spoke with a unanimous, collective voice, demanding fair pay for the hours they work, healthcare, a safe and sustainable working environment, and respect for the work they do,” Mark Patch, VFX organizer for IATSE, said in a statement. “There could be no stronger statement highlighting the overwhelming need for us to continue our work and bring union protections and standards to all VFX workers across the industry. And there could be no stronger example of the courage and solidarity of these workers than each and every one of them declaring ‘union YES!'”

The vote comes at a time when Marvel movies, like this year’s lukewarm “Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania,” and other special effects-heavy blockbusters, like “Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse,” have been under fire for the large workload and tight deadlines placed on VFX teams.

So far, Marvel Studios is the only in-house VFX team unionized with IATSE, but Walt Disney Pictures VFX staffers recently moved to unionize in late August.

“This is historic and I’m glad to be part of it,” Thomas Barnard, VFX coordinator at Marvel, said in a statement. “Not only will this radically change the game by increasing the quality of storytelling through our work, it’s also a huge step forward for taking care of the unsung individuals who helped to build the industry.”

The next step for the union is to engage in collective bargaining negotiations with Marvel Studios execs in order to draft a contract that addresses the workers’ needs. As of now, negotiation dates have yet to be scheduled.

The unionization vote comes amid the ongoing WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes, as the guilds continue to seek fair contracts with the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers.

Another union striking.

I'm sure the Casino can afford to pay it's employees better than they do. They should pay those workers a wage that can feed a family and where these people can save for retirement. Do they have health benefits? They should. Don't you all agree? Or do you side with the Casino?

I got screwed out of a week's vacation from a change of ownership because we had no collective bargaining of the transaction to protect our interest of our labor.
The UAW is going after other auto makers.

Here's the part I wanted to point out. Remember me saying that unions raise everyone's wages? Because employers don't want their employees to unionize so if Ford got $40 hr, non union workers can soon expect to get a raise. Not $40 hr but whatever Toyota thinks will stop them from organizing. So you're welcome non union workers. Ungrateful fucks.

Unions are necessary to allow the worker the ability to negotiate their labor for a happier society.

Think about this. Unions are absolutely the key to a strong middle class. Without them, the middle class turned into the working poor. From lets say 1978 to NOW the GOP and Corporations have told us that have outlived their usefulness. They said there is no need for them anymore. Think about that. In those sames years union membership went from 35% of the population to around 5%. And in that time the middle class has gotten a 18% raise and the rich gave themselves 1322% raise.

Last year unions fought back and won big. But they'll never get the credit because only 5% of us are in unions. So those unions won't get credit for our raises that are coming BECAUSE unions won big last year. So they still have a lot of power. Just not as much as they once was. I'm glad to see unions are winning!

So remember this everyone when Republicans say they are good for the middle class. They don't like unions. They think unregulated free market capitalism created the middle class. It did not. It was government intervention and the right to organize.

So you get raises in sales because of union steelworkers? If you say so, but I know you are making it up, as usual.

If unskilled union workers are making as much as I do now eventually I will get a raise yes.

And what do you mean raises in sales? I would say yes. Because that steel mill creates an entire economy around it. Tier 1, 2 and 3 suppliers. I remember when I sold computer training in the 90's. It wasn't just the white collar workers in the steel mill who needed to learn excel, powerpoint and word. It was also the white collar and administrative people working for those tier 1, 2 and 3 companies that bought my services.

And waiters and waitresses and people who own restaurants get raises in sales too because all those people go out to lunch. Smooshing the white collar people in the steel mill to get them to buy our products.

You sure diverted away from the question.

You sure diverted away from the question.
I know you're simple but the answer isn't simple. You got my point and I get yours.

I remember when I graduated college Young Republicans attacking the Auto unions would say "why should those blue collar dopes be making as much as you?" Why? Because Ford had record profits.

You sure diverted away from the question.
Starbucks baristas from 21 stores around the country told the company Tuesday that they plan to organize, potentially adding hundreds of new members to a union campaign that’s battling the coffee chain for first contracts.
The union, Workers United, said it is the largest group of Starbucks stores to go public with their organizing plans in a single day since the effort began in Western New York in 2021. The 21 locations are scattered across 14 states from coast to coast.

Workers sent a joint letter to the company’s CEO, Laxman Narasimhan, demanding “higher wages, fair and consistent scheduling, improved benefits, and a safe and dignified workplace.”
“We have been met with higher and higher expectations without being given the resources to meet them,” they wrote.

A Starbucks spokesperson said that although the company believes a “direct relationship as partners is core to our culture,” it would respect employees’ right to organize and intends to negotiate first contracts with unionized stores this year.
“We encourage all partners at stores petitioning for representation to get the facts, make an informed choice and ensure their voice heard by voting in neutral, secret-ballot elections,” the spokesperson said.

If you can address my comments, it is fine by me because I know you have nothing and all you can do is divert. Thanks for proving me correct.

That's what the capitalists want the working class to believe. That unions are evil, but when the capitalists form their own unions, or the equivalent of a union, as in super PACs, and Chambers Of Commerce, and the "Christian Men's Business Association", and industry specific associations and guilds, and they have an army of lobbyists in the halls of government legally bribing politicians and they have think tanks and non-profit front companies and start and fund political organizations, advancing their vested interests. All of that is 100% kosher, all good, BUT labor unions NO! NOT LABOR UNIONS! NO! The workers should just negotiate everything on their own, as individual laborers, with their powerful wealthy employers. Suck it up bucko. Get to work and don't complain, SHUT THE EF-UP.

Majority Of Workers At Alabama Mercedes Plant Signed Union Cards, UAW Says

Organizing the Tuscaloosa facility would be a major boost to the UAW’s plans to unionize Southern autoworkers.

You don't want labor to have a seat at the table?

But Brown, who is up for reelection in a race that will be critical to Democrats retaining control of the Senate, broke from that reputation when he endorsed Cincinnati-based Kroger’s acquisition of Albertsons — a merger that progressive groups have lined up against and the Federal Trade Commission is challenging. Albertsons and Kroger are already the two largest grocery store chains in the country, and if successful, the $24.6 billion purchase would be the biggest supermarket merger in U.S. history.

Brown’s support for the merger also puts him at odds with the influential labor unions involved, who oppose the deal because of expected layoffs. Antitrust experts also insist that by reducing options in key markets, the merger would harm consumers.
