The problem with this "theory" is that even though the Democrats are by in large a bunch of left wing lunatics, they're not stupid enough to believe that a Republican controlled Senate is going to remove Donny from office without a slam dunk, open and shut case, which they along with most rational people know they don't have.

IMHO impeachment is a tool to embarrass Donny and (the Democrats hope) swing the 2020 election their way.

It is both, but the timing was pushed up because of ginsburg's lack of health.

The Democrats already know Donny isn't going to be removed from office by the Senate, thus they don't harbor any illusions about stopping any SCOTUS appointments between now and January 2021 using these impeachment proceedings.

Thus this isn't a plausible theory.

But it is extremely stupid and the only way I can see impeachment making even good nonsense is the D donor base demanding this idiocy in return for future donations

An overwhelming majority (83% according to FiveThirtyEight) of the Democrat Lemmings ..er.. "base" wants the House to impeach thus the Congress Critters from Crime Family-D are somewhat painted into a corner, unless of course they want to risk alienating and demoralizing their voters.

As opposed to 43.8% of Independents and 9.7% of Republicans supporting impeachment.

In other words typical Washington D.C. all partisan politics, all the time bullshit.

A major reason the Democrats control the West Coast is the uber-liberal Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals which has upheld almost every cockamamie liberal cause brought before them. The Dems knew that Hillary would pack the federal judicial system with leftwing lawyers who would remove all legal obstructions from the path of their socialist ambitions. The stymying of this leftist project of remaking of the federal judiciary had been a major frustration for the Democrats during the Obama administration due to the Republican-controlled Senate delaying or blocking Obama’s liberal appointees.
