On taxes, the Democrats instituted the first permanent income tax in 1913. Woodrow Wilson was a brutal and oppressive tax and spend maniac trying to tax people into equality over a hundred years ago. The proof is in the pudding. There was no federal income tax when Woodrow Wilson got in office and Republicans fought him tooth and nail on taxes.

FDR accelerated the slippery slope maximum income tax rate to 94% about 30 years later. Eventually Ronald Reagan brought it back down and Trump is currently trying to rescue Americans from oppressive taxes and big government.

Republicans have always fought for individualism and small government, rather than divisiveness and collectivism.

an income of $20,000 in 1913 is $520,000 in income today...

no body middle class or below got a tax hike by him.

AND preparing our Nation for World War is expensive

The Archdale of Austria-Hungary was not assassinated until a year later and America did not even plan on entering the war until years after that. It had nothing to do with war. There was no permanent income tax before 1913. It was about extremely brutal taxation strangling rich and poor alike.

So if we didn't have no income tax until 1913 how did the government operate?

A progressive federal income tax is fair....when added to the State taxes, which are regressive.. the middle class and poor pay a higher percentage of income in taxes than the richest.... in the States...

To start with, the government was much smaller back then. However, they got their funding from tariffs as well as taxation more in line with consumption taxes.
