Your article seems to equate an increase in the number of known species in a given location to an increase in population. That is not valid.

Isotopic analysis of the CO2 in the atmosphere shows that almost every molecule above the 280 ppm present at the beginning of the Industrial Revolution originated with fossil fuel combustion. That does not allow any growing contribution from termites or soil.
