Though Bergdahl's captivity might not be correctly called a "kidnapping" since he appears to have voluntarily walked over and joined them, the rest is as predictable as night following day.

The Taliban sees that they have uncovered a gold mine. Did some of your top people get captured by the Americans? No problem. Just grab a few Americans in turn, and the American "leaders" will fall down on their knees and let your people go back to you before you can take a deep breath.

And the Americans you managed to kill while your people were being captured, are "the icing on the cake" - you can have them for free.

Who wouldn't take a deal like that, and do everything they could to expand it?

Taliban commander claims more kidnappings will come now that Obama has completed his 5-for-1 hostage trade

A Taliban commander in Afghanistan said Thursday that Americans can expect to see more kidnappings to ransom accused terrorists held by the United States.

Terrorists under his command, the Taliban leader said, would work to take more Americans prisoner, since the Obama administration's deal to free Sgt. Bowe Bergdahl has shown captive U.S. troops can be used as leverage.

'It's better to kidnap one person like Bergdahl than kidnapping hundreds of useless people,' the commander told TIME magazine.

'It has encouraged our people. Now everybody will work hard to capture such an important bird.'

Yeah all they have to do is wait for someone to leave their post, capture them, wait 5 years and hope it goes well.

The argument of this thread amounts to, "This one deal above any other incident is what has finally given al-Qaeda and the Taliban the strength to fight back against America.

Thanks, Obama."

Good, solid Republican logic. Why can't Obama just go back to the good ol' Reagan days when Muslim terrorists were our friends?

I have a story to tell you.

When I was a little kid, I did stupid things like all kids do. Invariably, later on I was hard pressed to explain what possessed me to do X.

At one point, my father in frustration said the following to me.

"You behave as if stupidity were a virtue." It was funny...and true. I've never forgotten it.

Let's just move past the point about WHY in God's name you take the Taliban at their word since they likely need no other reason to kidnap Americans than the ones they already have. Truth is, if they could, they WOULD kidnap more.

So, now that I've jumped beyond the obvious, let me touch on something that's a wee bit more subtle, but not by much.

Do you think that the Taliban in Afghanistan and Pakistan monitor the American media that's broadcast all around the world on satellite?

If the answer is yes, what are they seeing?

Answer: They're seeing and hearing conservatives attack Bergdahl AND the president and plunging our media into yet one more rhetorical fist fight. Hell, they helped orchestrate the whole thing with their propaganda video. To THEM, this is a GOOD thing.

Think they'd feel the way if the country just welcomed Bergdahl back, and we seemed united?

The Taliban have jerked your chain once already, and they're doing it AGAIN. And the REASON why they're doing it is because of YOU and people LIKE you who have this kind of reaction and turn the whole thing into a controversy which serves to do nothing but distract us as a nation and draw the attention of our leaders away from the war effort just to deal with this.

Under those circumstances, of COURSE the Taliban would love to kidnap another American if they thought they could recreate this kind of discord here at home.

So, again, I can't help but be drawn to those words of my father. Allow me to paraphrase it to make it accurate to the occasion.

Conservatives behave as if stupidity were a virtue!!!!!!!!!!!

The same can be said for the whackos who shoot 20 kids in a school. If they COULDN'T expect weeks of blazing headlines long after the police kill them, do you think they would still shoot 20 kids in a school? Probably not (though it's hard to tell with insane whackos).

But if the solution is to muzzle the press and prevent them from writing blazing headlines and the articles that go with them... it's a solution we can't use.

Sorry. Back to the drawing board.

Bush released 520+, some justified, others questionable, like this one:

"U.S. officials suspect that a former Guantanamo Bay detainee played a role in the attack on the American diplomatic compound in Benghazi, Libya, and are planning to designate the group he leads as a foreign terrorist organization, according to officials familiar with the plans.
Militiamen under the command of Abu Sufian bin Qumu, the leader of Ansar al-Sharia in the Libyan city of Darnah, participated in the attack that killed U.S. Ambassador J. Christopher Stevens and three other Americans, U.S. officials said…
In 2007, Qumu was released from the U.S. prison at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, and sent to Libya, where he was detained. The Libyan government released him in 2008.

GW Bush is not President anymore...let it go. The current schmuck in the White House is the focus now.

The Taliban has had their asses kicked by the US for the last 13 years. After a protracted occupation, the US will finally pull most forces out by the end of this year

Why would the Taliban want to do anything to encourage the US to extend its occupation?

I realize you're trying to excuse this hack president of yet more ineptitude but all you're doing is proving the point of his ineptitude. He's repeating a mistake. That doesn't justify anything. Typical lefty non-response. Democrats should not be allowed to vote.

Obama is following Bush's example, so Obama is wrong and Bush is irrelevant.

Remind us again who started this bullshit war in the first place? It was Obama in 2008, right?

One more from the Bush releaes:

Abdul Rahman Noorani was a citizen of Afghanistan who was held in extrajudicial detention in the United States Guantanamo Bay detainment camps, in Cuba.[1] His Internment Serial Number was 582.

He was repatriated on July 16, 2003.[2]

Yes, Obama is President now, but pretending Bush did not release Gitmo "detainees" that returned to the Taliban is silly. How do we end the extremists grip on some Muslim populations? Invading the secular Iraq sure didn't do it.

According to your own illogic, yes.
What in the god-damned fuck does that even mean? Reagan sold weapons to bin Laden and many other terrorists. That happened. The GOP can therefore sit down and shut the fuck up.

Your greatest fucking hero created the modern jihad. Sit down, child, and shut the fuck up.

Don't talk about terrorism or hypocrisy. You do not have the moral authority to speak on such matters. You worship the memory of your dead B-movie actor President for creating the jihad and trading missiles for hostages, but now you have a problem with Obama winding down a war that your fucking country designed to never end?

Reagan was a piece of shit and the Republican party needs to shut the fuck up. Obama sucks, that's very true, but Republicans still just need to shut the fuck up.

"The harm has been done"; true, but pretending Bush didn't release the most dangerous is not true. Saudis got a free ticket out, FAST. From FreeRepublic:

President George W Bush will face a frosty reception today during a visit to Saudi Arabia amid anger at America's continued detention of the kingdom's citizens at Guantanamo Bay.

The US president arrived in Riyadh last night on the latest stage of his tour of the Middle East and was treated to the lavish personal hospitality of King Abdullah.

But talks today will be soured by the demand that the prison camp's remaining 13 Saudi detainees should be sent home at once - a plea by Prince Nayef, the interior minister, that was made public before Mr Bush arrived.

Saudi officials said growing public anger, fuelled by the media, had forced Riyadh to put Guantanamo at the heart of preparations for President Bush's first visit.

"I think the issue has been mishandled in bilateral terms," said Jamal Khashoggi, editor-in-chief of the Watan newspaper and a close aide to the royal family.

"It should have been resolved before the visit. Instead it's still in the media even though it's nearly resolved and already agreed that they will come back."

In a fresh indication of the damage that Guantanamo's extraordinary judicial set-up has inflicted on the US, particularly among strategic allies, America's most senior military official said yesterday that the camp should be shut.

Admiral Michael Mullin, the chairman of the joint chiefs of staff, said: "I'd like to see it shut down. I believe that from the standpoint of how it reflects on us that it's been pretty damaging."

Intense lobbying by Saudi Arabia has resulted in the release of more than 100 of its nationals, almost half in the past four months.

Riyadh's strong relationship with Washington has been a factor in the rapid action. By contrast only 13 have returned to Yemen, which has poor relations with the US.

There are currently 277 detainees at Guantanamo, down from a peak of more than 600.

You sir need an education. The "modern jihad" as you put it, dates back to 1920's imperialism and the creation of the Baathist Party in the Middle-East. they were a version of Islamic Fascist. The Islamic fundamentalist have been advocating the overthrow of royal and dictatorial regimes in that region since the 1950's. In 1979 USSR invaded Afghanistan. We supported Mujahadeen fighter's to kill Russians as pay back for Vietnam. Foreign fighter like Osama Bin Laden travel to Afghanistan after a fatwa for jihad had been issued by many Muslim clerics. After Soviets split a civil war erupted between the Northern Alliance and Taliban. we pretty much abandoned the Northern Alliance and General Massoud all through the (Clinton) 1990's. Osama bin Laden stayed and set up Al Qaeda (translation: The Base) at the invite of Taliban. Ergo, the Soviets, not Reagan created the situation in Afghanistan and a Democrat, Slick Willie was too concerned with blow jobs to kill Bin Laden.

Good, solid Republican logic. Why can't Obama just go back to the good ol' Reagan days when Muslim terrorists were our friends?

Do you know why Reagan supported the Muslims in Afghanistan? I would like to hear it if you do.
