Support the fast food workers

The military is overpaid. A buck private makes at least 15 per hour counting in benefits, food, clothing, shelter, health care provided.

And please tell me how you arrive at that figure.

On active duty, my average work week at a minimum was 11 hours per day. And quite often for years on end I was putting in 80+ hours a week.

And with all of those adjustments you are putting in, that is only for people who are married. Most of the members in the military are single, so do not get anything but base pay, an annual clothing allowance (an entire $450 a year), and a shared room in the barracks.

As for food, big whoop-de-do. Believe it or not, anybody can eat on base, it is not some "military only" feature. You are welcome to do like we do and pay around $5 and eat in the chow hall, I only did it when I had to (or towards the end of the month when I was broke).

A "Buck Private" as you said it makes just over $1,500 a month. Factor in @200 per month for a PPO, that makes it $1,700 per month.

So let's be generous, figure $500 a month for housing, and the same for food (even though for us that are married, we only get $352 per month), that is $1,800 per month, or $450 a week (before taxes).

Figure that most work the same 11 hour days (6am-5pm), that comes to....

$8.18 per hour. About half of the figure you quote.

When I was deployed, I did an article for the unit's monthly newsletter. I took the pay of a married E-4 with 3 years in and added up all the hazard duty pay, separation pay, and the other things we got when deployed. I then put in the average work week that most of us put in (100 hours per week), and came to a figure of around $5 an hour.

And you dare to say we are "overpaid"?

Tell you what, next time you put in a 100+ hour work week, let me know. We were normally grateful when we got off a bit early, and only did 10.5 hours 1 or 2 days per week.

However, we do not do it for the money. When I quit my job and went back in the military in 2007, I took a significant pay cut (over $5k per year). And since I left active duty, my income has gone up over $15k per year.

So to say our military is overpaid is grossly insulting.

This fucking prick comes on here to piss people off. He's here as a no brained fool.
He's free entertainment.

"eighty hours a week!" Pooh.

You think I am kidding?

My first duty station was guarding a Naval Weapons Station. I pulled 36 hours on, 36 hours off. And during periods of increased security, I would often pull 48 hour shifts.

And that was my schedule from 1983-1987. To this day I still have some of the most messed up sleep schedules that can be imagined.

During deployment, I worked 24 on and 24 off for an entire year. But that "24 off" was not really 24 off. Including PT and it was really 28 on and 20 off. And when we were on high alert, not even 20 hours off, sleeping on the floor for 2 or 3 hours before continuing, doing this for a week straight (I think I put in close to 140 hours those weeks).

You are under some illusion I guess that we just work 8 hour days then go home.
Did you work at Earle?...If so, not far from where I come from.

You are retarded. They pay for clothing? Maybe if you're willing to wear military clothing when your off work, and even then you're only allowed to wear your dress uniform off base. They pay for SOME food, but its not like the galley is open at midnight for personell on night shift. The health care is also VERY limited. Get a cavity, they simply pull the tooth.

I was making $200 dollars every 2 Weeks when I was E1, so don't tell me I was getting good pay. You try and buy food, clothes, music, drinks, entertainment, etc on $200 every two Weeks.
Add it up, food, shelter, clothing, health care, military discounts, education.

You must learn personal responsibility. The military is the most socialistic organization there is.

I've been an E1 and I've earned $15 per hour in the civilian world. I'm telling you, I was better off financially as a civilian.

You don't know what your talking about.

What exploiting? There are normally 20 people who apply for every opening at WallMart.

As I have long said, if you do not like getting minimum wage, get yourself some skills so you make a decent income!

I have not made "Minimum Wage" since I was in High School, over 30 years ago. And the only times I did, it was "Wage +", as in tips or a commission where the actual "minimum Wage" was nothing but beer money.

I for one am sick and tired of hearing how "exploited" some 28 year old slacker is who has never done anything above minimal labor unskilled work. If anybody is over 21 and still making minimum wage, then they need to take a real hard look at themselves, because they are failing in life for one reason or another.

Bad work quality, talking back to the boss or customers, showing up late or not showing up at all, not taking more responsibility, the reasons are many. But I can't think of a single reason why somebody would work at a place for more then a year and still be making minimum wage.

Hell, I was 18 and working at a fast food chain for less then 6 months when I got my first promotion and a 50 cent per hour raise (this was in 1983, $3.35, would be around $1 an hour raise today). And if I had stayed there they were talking about sending me to the 2 year AA program at the corporate headquarters.

But I was already enlisted in the military, so I turned all of that down. But I still left after 9 months, making $4.10. So when people whine about only making minimum wage, I tell them they need to get off their butt and learn a skill so they are not just "minimum wage employees".

It is because of them( E-1's) and others who served you can live in the comfort of your home knowing your rights to criticize them are secured.
Now...A 'buck private" which is an E-1 makes $1516 per month. That's less than $400 per week... So, genius....I will ask you again...Care to change your bullshit story?

Is this what their pay (cash take home pay for spending) is in total, yet not to include housing, medical, education, military discounts, day care, electricity, base privileges, hobby shop, camping or recreational facilities, etc. ? Doesn't the military also have a pay scale system in which they merit the workings of the individual by upping his or her rank and pay as they do well over time or they pass the grade as is expected of them ? How come there are companies that rate internal jobs at one specific rate, and then no matter how well you do for them or how long you stay there or how much profit they make, you are stuck if don't quit the job and move on elsewhere ?

Well said.

Another thing, no matter what they get automatic raises for "time in grade".

There is also profiency pay, temporary duty pay [we had the armu europeon boxing champion in my artillery battery in germany who got paid extra tdy money and was never at the battery but was living it up all over europe. He was promoted many times for not actually serving any military duties.

For one, that is before taxes.

And in my entire career, my family lived in base housing exactly once. To give you an idea how bad it is, when they closed the base I was stationed at, they offered the housing up to be converted into a housing project. The County looked at it, said it was to substandard and bulldozed it.

And I have seen that over and over all around the country. Long Beach, Vallejo, El Paso, San Francisco, over and over again. Military housing considered so bad that the civilian housing authorities won't even use it to house the homeless, they destroy it instead.

And you think this is something to brag about? Really?

Well, let's just say that when I got married, my new bride and I lived in Compton. That was the only place we could afford to live. I guess you get the impression we live in mansions or something, what a joke.

Day care, another joke. It actually costs more to put our children in on-base day care then it does out in town. The only reason why we use it instead of that in the civilian world is that they are open longer hours to account for our work schedules. But trust me, it is not free, and it is not cheap.

Military discounts? Are you stoned? For one, that is not offered by the military, and the ones available are normally the same as when I get for being a AAA member.

And do you think those "hobby shops", "camping" and the like are either free or all that great?

Here, do not just take my word for it, here is one of the premiere campgrounds in El Paso.

El Paso Roadrunner RV Park Details 100005927 Good Sam Club

This is where we took our rig for service when it needed it. It is a nice quiet park, swimming pool, grass everywhere, good distance from the Freeway and lots of large shade trees. $25 a day ($20 if in Good Sam or AAA, no military discount).

Here are the great facilities on base:

Fort Bliss MWR

No shade, about 100 meters from a busy freeway, no trees, no grass, the "dog park" is just a fenced off gravel area. $18-20 a day.

It does not take rocket science to decide where to stay. Unless you are the ultimate tightwad or cheap bastard you go to Roadrunner.

And our pay raises and promotions are in no way guaranteed. How often in the civilian world do you get hurt then fired? In the military "Up or Out" is the phrase of the day, but sometimes you just can't move "up". You might even have an awesome record, and high reviews. But if you are in a job that promotes slowly you may very well find yourself out of a job.

There is also profiency pay, temporary duty pay [we had the armu europeon boxing champion in my artillery battery in germany who got paid extra tdy money and was never at the battery but was living it up all over europe. He was promoted many times for not actually serving any military duties.

And how many of us ever see those kinds of pay?

I have seen none of those which you describe, in over 16 years of service. You are talking about quite literally 1 in 500,000. And you are also not mentioning something else:

TDY (Temporary Duty) is a supplement for those that are not on post for various reasons, say at a convention or school or doing rounds in a sport. It pays for things like hotel rooms, food, and travel expenses. Basically nothing but an expense account without the bookkeeping. And it is a flat rate, so if you "make money" depends on where you stay. If you spend a week in a motel in Las Vegas (there are lots of deals), you will likely pocket some extra money.

If you are in Anaheim or San Francisco, expect to be paying out of your own pocket, because TDY will not cover all the expenses.

The only times I qualified for TDY pay was when I was transferring from one duty station to another, and it never even came close to what my expenses were. I have however had an expense account, and it covered 100% of every expense I had, as long as I documented it.

Today I'm joining a national strike against low pay by thousands of fast food workers in cities across the country.

I'm on strike because I can't make ends meet on low hours and the $8.25/hour I make at McDonald's in Chicago. Because each month I have to make hard choices -- like which meal to skip, or which bill not to pay - just so that my kids and I can get by. No one who works for a living should have to make those choices. And I want more for my kids -- and their future -- than just barely "getting by."

Will you join me and add your name to my petition to demand that the nation's eight largest fast-food chains raise the wages of their workers today?

On behalf of striking fast-food workers across the country, I started my own campaign on CREDO's new site that allows activists to start their own petitions. My petition, which is to McDonald's, Wendy's, Burger King, Taco Bell, KFC, Pizza Hut, Domino's and Papa John's, asks the following:

Together, your restaurants employ millions of people. Millions of people, mostly adults, who can't afford rent if they want to eat. Who can't afford health care if they want to pay their bus fare. Millions of people, and more than 25% of them are parents who can't afford school supplies if they also have to buy school shoes.

Last year your combined profits were $7.35 billion. Yet you still paid most of your workers less than $11,200 a year – poverty wages. It’s shameful. And outrageous.

We call on you to raise wages for your workers.

By now, everyone knows that fast food employees like me can’t make ends meet on minimum wage or barely more. They know how incredibly profitable -- and out of touch -- the corporations we work for are. They know – and you know – that something has to change. Starting now.

We need to know you have our backs -- please help us send the fast food chains we work for a message that people are with us in this fight.

Add your name to my petition to demand that the nation's eight largest fast-food chains raise the wages of their workers today.

Thank you for your support.
