If the "economy is king," as you posit, why then are so comparatively few folks, particularly Trumpkins, flat out ignorant about economics, from both theoretical and practical standpoints. To wit,

• In spite of it having been soundly shown that immigration -- legal and illegal, independently and jointly -- have been shown to produce a net increase to U.S. GDP, yet Trumpkins desire less of both.
• In spite of it having been shown theoretically and empirically that tariffs are detrimental to the economy of the nation imposing them, Trumpkins support Trump's announced tariffs.
  • How many Trumpkins have you seen present a case showing that the elasticity of demand/supply with regard to raw steel and raw aluminum is such that the incidence of the tariff falls not on consumers but on on producers or foreign suppliers and consumers? Of course they haven't because such a case simply cannot be credibly made. Hell, I haven't even seen any of them, by the nature/content of the of their layman's-language narratives, even allude to the fact that the price elasticities for those two commodities are inversely related, thereby making the incidence of the tariff fall predominantly on domestic consumers.
  • Even though exists the theory of "optimal tariffs" (see linked content here: Trump says he has his pick of the top ten people in any discipline), how many Trumpkins have you seen present the empirical case showing that Trump's tariff qualifies as such a tariff? I suspect the answer is not one. I know that among folks who understand optimal tariffs, there is nobody making the case that Trump's tariffs are such; the reason they aren't is that is that his tariffs don't meet the criteria for being optimal tariffs.
• In spite of there being nearly a century's worth of theoretical and practical data, thought, and analysis showing that the gains from free trade outstrip the losses, Trumpkins disregard all of it and advocate for trade restrictions.

Those are but three examples of instances in which trumpkins espouse notions and practices that anyone for whom the "economy is king" and who is also "reasonable," rational, would not. Were the economy king, as you suggest, people, particularly fiscally conservative people, would espouse economic and other policies that have long been known to benefit the economy and not at all be deleterious to it.

What Trumpkins embrace are, quite simply, policies that benefit some people in the economy as a whole, and the strange part about their doing so is that the people who will benefit aren't economically "average citizens;" the "winners" are the one-percenters. And make no mistake, there's not a one-percenter around who doesn't know as much, yet there are plenty of "average citizens" who (1) don't know it, (2) don't realize the extent to which they've been bamboozled, and (3) are making no effort to "trust, but verify" the BS they've been fed.
