What caused the sudden realization that the US was in trouble because of spending? The Tea Party people in the GOP. It happened because politicians finally told the truth. Pretty ironic that a leftie who uses "truth matters" would suggest that politicians should compromise on the truth.

They should follow through on the positions their constituents put them there to do. IE if you promised to try and reduce government spending then you damn well better do what you can to accomplish that.

The right agrees to tax increases.

The left agrees to entitlement cuts.

Unless these two fundamental tenets are agreed upon, any numbers are pointless – the budget can not be balanced by just one or the other.
