Steve Grasz, an Omaha attorney who served as chief deputy attorney general for Nebraska from 1991 to 2002, has been nominated by President Donald Trump to a seat on the U.S. Court of Appeals for the 8th Circuit.

Grasz was recommended for the post by Nebraska Sens. Deb Fischer and Ben Sasse.

Gov. Pete Ricketts praised the selection of Grasz, who is senior counsel at Husch Blackwell LLP in Omaha.

Grasz would succeed 8th Circuit Chief Judge William Jay Riley, who has announced plans to retire from active service.

In a joint announcement, Fischer and Sasse praised Grasz.

"Steve has sterling credentials and impressive experience," Fischer said. "His cases have been before the highest courts in Nebraska and our nation.

"Moreover, Steve's temperament, integrity and character are absolutely superb," she said.

Sasse described Grasz as "a by-the-book kind of guy" and said "that's exactly what the 8th Circuit needs.
