The professor dangled the bait (Russian information) in front of Papadopoulos and introduced him to a sexy young thing, who in turn introduced Papadopoulos to the Australian Ambassador. That is called a honey trap in spy craft, also a form of entrapment. Papadopoulos tells the Ambassador the Russians have dirt on the bitch, because the professor told him. Then the Ambassador call US intel. A really nice circle jerk to create a fake counterintelligence investigation. Then it's off to the propaganda races.
