Though no U.S. forces were killed in the Saturday evening raid that led to the death of an ISIS leader, one military working dog suffered severe injuries in the line of duty.

The dog, whose name and breed remain unknown, chased Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi into a tunnel and cornered him. With no place to go, the terrorist leader blew himself up along with three of his children, who he was using as human shields. The dog’s injuries highlighted the importance of military working dogs in special operations. Often, they will enter the danger zone with a camera on their backs before the humans do so.

"The dog is a war veteran and a valued member of the team," a currently serving soldier assigned to Delta Force told the Washington Examiner. The soldier did not provide details, pending permission from the dog's handler and chain of command. Everyone involved in the mission is being debriefed and is out of communication for the time being, the soldier said. Within the community, he says, "The injury to the dog is an injury to one of us. These dogs are a special breed of courageous."

Military working dogs are essential teammates for U.S. soldiers, especially in the counterinsurgency and counterterrorism operations that followed the terrorist attacks on September 11, 2001. But the dogs used by the military’s most elite units are elite themselves. Like their human counterparts, they are hand-picked to serve in units like Delta Force, the Army Rangers, and the Navy SEALs.

These amazing dogs are better PEOPLE and more supportive than many of our so called citizens. Hope for a full recovery and a big juicy steak for a true war hero....and a visit with handler to the White House medal ceremony

Military war dogs have saved thousand of American lives from Vietnam through today.

The US military left hundreds of MWD in Vietnam. They were considers equipment. Not living breathing brothers.

What a betrayal. The handlers of those dogs still cry today for the partners left behind.

Muslim savages are scared shitless of dogs. Saw one of these Belgian Malinois (a variation of a German Shepard) last summer who seemed like he was waiting for a Pitbull to step up and get torn apart. Awesome dogs!

That they are. You can't talk them out of attacking and a gun won't stop them.

Mal's are great MWD's along with the ever present German Shepherd. Great dogs.

. . . it's almost as believable as that Osama bin Laden raid thingy . . . :71:

It's worth mentioning that the last sight Baghdadi and Bin Laden had on this earth was the fangs of an American dog.

I hope the dog recovers and enjoys a long retirement.

The Heroic dog that was injured during the U.S. military operation that killed Islamic State (ISIS) leader Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi has already returned to duty, the U.S. government said Monday.

“The dog is fine and has returned to duty,” an unnamed U.S. official told Reuters White House correspondent Steve Holland.

President Donald Trump lauded the canine at Sunday’s press conference in which he offered vivid details of how the elite U.S. Army special operators took down one of the world’s most wanted terrorists.

“Our ‘K-9,’ as they call it, a beautiful dog, a talented dog, was injured and brought back,” the president said in his national address from the White House.

Speaking to the Washington Examiner, one Delta Force soldier said of the dog’s wounds: “The injury to the dog is an injury to one of us. These dogs are a special breed of courageous.”

Neither President Trump nor the Department of Defense (D0D) has released additional details regarding the canine soldier, but retired Marine Ron Aiello told the New York Times that the dog was either a Belgian Malinois or German Shepherd.

“If they’re leading the patrol, they want a dog that is not only an explosive detection dog but on command can be aggressive,” said Aiello. “On a mission like this you want a dog that can be aggressive when necessary.”

The dog does not understand the danger. The dog does not understand that death or serious injury could await it. That is not courage. If it is, then the drones we send out to scout about are the most courageous things in the universe.

Courage is going on despite the fear. The dog is an amazing feat of behavior training from birth.
