Hating Hatters
Organizers had instructed participants to be peaceful if arrests came, and most were. Many gathered in the center of the park, locking arms, and sang We Shall Overcome until police led them out, one-by-one to waiting buses. Some were dragged out while others left on foot, handcuffed with plastic ties.

Oakland was less peaceful. Police fired tear gas and beanbag rounds as they cleared out the makeshift city Tuesday. After nightfall, protesters gathered at a downtown library and began marching toward City Hall in an attempt to re-establish a presence in the area of the disbanded camp.

They were met by police in riot gear. Officers cleared the area by firing tear gas over a roughly three-hour stretch of evening scuffles.

Police, protesters clash in Atlanta, Oakland

the right to protest is being taken away in this country

No it isn't. The right to peacefully protest does not include the right to do whatever the fuck you want, wherever the fuck you want and the other 99.9999999999999999999% of the population just have to deal with it for as long as you want to do it.

And you fail to mention the riot gear was in response to the"peaceful" protesters throwing bottles.

For it to be Kent state, there would have to be National Guardsmen, and dead protesters, neither of which were found in these two locations.

Far from Kent State though, young people. Get back to me when 4 are KILLED. Oh boy....These youngsters have to police the few wild ones themselves...

That was the end of Kent State, not the beginning.

No one is infringing on the right to "Peacfully assemble" as granted by the first ammendment.

Police are worthless. We should cut all government funding to support them on any level.

If it's a Tea Party group being accosted, then that's a travesty.

If it's an OWS group or anything remotely liberal, then the cops did the right thing.

Most Tea Party protests are one shot deals, usually with the proper permits applied for. Alot of thier rallys are also in far more open areas, not in the downtowns of major cities.

There is a difference between a one shot protest march, and a continued occupation of a public space. At that point you are denying the rest of the public the use of said space.

Once the announcement has made that the officals want you to disperse, you have 3 options. Leave, get arrested, or fight back.

This is not suppression of opinion, thier opinions have been noted. Suppresion would require the PREVENTION of their opinions from being heard. Those protesters who want to keep pushing can try to re-occupy the public area, or move to another and continue on.

Tea Party rallies never required riot police or hazmat crews to cleanup up the mess.

Come on, no one is taking away the right to peacefully assemble. They can be there every single day during the time the park allows visitors. They can't set up tents, have parties and a hip-hop band without proper approval.

The city of Atlanta was willing to let them stay as long as they wanted, even though it was against park rules. They even provided port-a-potties and free security. When they pushed Kasim Reed too hard, he called their bluff. The hip-hop party was over the top.

This isn't even close to Kent State. Peaceful protests don't involve breaking the law.

And they also got permits to be in the places they went to (many OWS protests have no permits) and did not violate the terms of the permits (of the few that did get permits many have violated the terms)

From what I am reading about these protesters, I dont think they have the stomach to push it to the level Kent State reached. Modern police forces are also far more capable of handling unarmed protesters than in the 60's.

We havent even gotten to the fire hoses and attack dog level yet.

Is it really free speech if you need to get the governments permission to engage in it?

Bullshit. That ain't gonna happen.

That'd require Wall $treet to insist-upon Martial Law, and Republicans haven't (YET) $old that option (to the 1%ers/high-roller$).

"The nation’s richest citizens almost tripled their incomes between 1979 and 2007 as the inequality of the distribution of wealth in the United States expanded, according to a new government report."

Perhaps, we need to amend the Freedom of Assembly. I always figured it would be better applied to manufacturing.
