Any man yelling about the oppression of others is my hero

And this was the Southern Man's response to Neil Young's "Southern Man".

It was also a response to Young's less known song "Alabama". I think Skynyrd were pretty much saying we're not all like that in the south-you can't box us all in. (and for the record Skynyrd also attacked southern racism/bigotry in Sweet Home Alabama).

"In Birmingham, they love the governor (boo boo boo)
Now we all did what we could do"

Producer Al Kooper said of the lines: "The line 'We all did what we could do' is sort of ambiguous. We tried to get Wallace out of there' is how I always thought of it."

Ronnie Van Zandt also said of the first line (which references George Wallace-governor who supported segregation):

"The lyrics about the governor of Alabama were misunderstood. The general public didn't notice the words 'boo boo boo' after that particular line, and the media picked up only on the reference to the people loving the governor. Wallace and I have very little in common. I don't like what he says about colored people."

Based on this I think that they were responding to the painting every southern man as a bigot-and not the actual message of anti-bigotry of what Young was saying.
