My father laughs at our expenses todays. He built our home in the mid 60's. HIs mortgage was less than most people pay for their cell phone plans today. Back then, you had (if lucky) a 25 inch color television, a record player, and one car for the family. You ate out two or three times a year for a treat, and going to see a movie was just as frequent.

Our gas and electric bills were much smaller than today (thank you environmentalists) and gasoline was about 80 cents a gallon.

Look at us today! Cell phone bills, cable or satellite television bills, 80" UHD televisions, pay per view, Netflix, five different video game systems, a car for every adult in the household, this internet, lawn care and plowing services, and I'm sure I forgot some items; oh yes, fast food and dining several times a week another expense we didn't have years ago.

The point is we need two incomes for those larger homes and town houses we didn't live in years ago. You want to drive the newest automobiles, that's about 20% of your paycheck.
