Should PORN be allowed at PUBLIC LIBRARIES?

Any of you naysayers have a reason why not, since it's a "public" library, where you're supposed to be able to find any reading material you like?

I would say that it is a "public" library because the public gets to say what they will allow to be there.

Additionally, the "public" library is usually funded in part by tax money...and most people would not want to pay for other people's pornography.

If it is a "private" library, that would be fine.

For the third time, I don't want to pay for someones drug habit, but I'm forced to...and they're likely not even in MY community. :eusa_eh:

Absolutely none, to me. However, it's not for me to decide what someone else should be allowed to read. That said... so long as kids under 18 don't have access to it, because it's in a restricted area, what do you care?

I care because it's my tax dollars funding the public library. Have you ever been to an adult bookstore?

What purpose does NASCAR serve the public? Bet you can find a magazine on that.

More people like porn than you may think Ll. If you're a legal adult you should have access to it. This "the government has to protect the public" bit is out of control. I have free will, so do you. Everyone does. You don't want to look at it, don't. The government should NOT be in the business of deciding what we can or can't see or read, period, and that includes porn.

So yes, I say it should be allowed in public libraries, under supervision.

They have places for that kind of reading material, do they not? You're equating NASCAR with porn?

It seems to me porn is a privacy issue and a family values issue. Given how crazy porn is today it seems that some control is required but how much and does it matter? It is a tough topic but we don't allow all things under the rubric that freedom is all that matters. Would you want your child to be in or exposed to white power groups or Mein Kampf orientation? Where does curiosity or individual choice come in? Once years ago we were trying to find a blank vcr tape we found our sons had some porn. They were older, we said nothing. They are married and doing fine. Porn sure rotted my brain. lol

I had more faith in your ability to not follow the lockstep weak "taxpayer" argument. Do yo currently like where YOUR tax dollars go? I don't. Why should this be any different?

Like you could have kept my testosterone filled body out of a restricted area in my mid teens, i would have found a way in.

All a kid today needs is a computer, and they can see all the porn they want, and they do. Hell they wouldn't NEED to sneak into the library for that. They take naked pictures of each other with their phones and pass them around. I'm afraid our youth have already been bombarded with porn by simply proxy of modern day electronics.

The why place any restriction on porn? Hell why make any restrictions on anything at all? There is always a way around any restriction so why even bother. :cuckoo:

Two things...

Public libraries are controlled by local government...not state or federal government. I don't think that there are any federal laws prohibiting porn in libraries. Any laws would be imposed by the town council...your neighbors.

Secondly, the government is NOT in the business of deciding what you can or can't read...they are only in the business of deciding where you CAN'T read it.

Just like you can't fuck in the town square. The government doesn't say you can't fuck...just no fucking in public.

I don't believe porn should be allowed at such an institution. However, I've read where conservatives want to ban the Color Purple and works by Tennesse Willilams and Truman Capote. They may not be able to distinquish the difference between liturature and porn. One has to wonder.

So your argument is that you are paying for someone's drug habit because they are using their welfare checks to pay for drugs.

As I see it, they can use those same welfare checks to purchase their own porn.

Me first. I'd like his post to more accurately reflect the truth, than convenient fabrications.

But they don't have to, do they? Why? Because things like *that* aren't restricted when they SHOULD be. We're too worried about stupid shit, and not worried enough about important shit.

Seems you're a bit behind in reading posts - taxpayer funds has already been covered.. You're fine paying for some druggies habit? No? You're forced to with every paycheck.

you are right, I don't take the time to read every response. Porn is one of those luxuries people should pay for on their own. and no I'm not fine with paying for druggies either. or illegals either. shit people we don't have money trees.

Don't get me wrong - I'm not all for it, either.. If I want a book, I go buy a book. I don't borrow one from the library...never know where it's been.

But, who decides what stupid shit we're forced to pay for, and what stupid shit should be banned...

right now sad to say it's the lying democrats. sorry! I do borrow a lot of books from the library. I donate a lot too. I just wash my hands a lot too.

The question was posed, I answered it. I apologize if it's not up to your standards. As for where my tax dollars go, if I had a choice then I would not fund most the shit I fund. I'm a proponent of "fair tax' system as defined by Mike Huckabee.

Porn in libraries...I see three problems with this:

1. What percent of porn that was checked out of the library would ever be returned?
2. What percent of porn that was returned would have pages stuck together?
3. If porn was not allowed to be checked out, but only viewed in the library (like reference books), would the room have a linoleum floor for easy cleaning?
4. Would the library supply kleenex, or would the patron need to bring his own?
5. How quickly would the porn be replaced? After all, many of the books in the library are rather old and outdated. Outdated porn is less enjoyable.

Then you're probably one of the few.. Most people haven't stepped in one since they got out of school...which I'd say is evidenced by the fact that you can drive by practically any library you can find it, and you'll find it close to empty. Most people now do to Barnes & Noble, or Borders when they want to lounge around and read, or get any form of reading material, or other media.

Never mind. My fingers got ahead of my brain. I thought you said something else.. My point is, we're not fighting tooth and nail for welfare recipients to be required to take drug tests, because it's not "cost effective", but we're worried about what goes into someone elses local library.

RD, you need to man up, or woman up, and state that this is your opinion, and not a fact. If this is a fact, you need to link a source so it could be scrutinized. The reason I say this is that it's the first I've ever heard of it, and the first from other posters as well, apparently. If you can't, then it makes you look pretty rediculious and catagorized as just another partisan story teller.

I would like to see welfare recipients and medicaid recipients to have negative nicotine tests in order to get their assistance. If you have enough money to spend $5+ per day on cigarettes, you have enough money to buy a meal.

our local library is very busy. all of the time. not only books are available but cd's and dvd's they offer computer classes and most local artists display their work there. They also have a small used book store. I still buy some books,, the ones I'm not willing to wait for, and usually I end up donating them to the library when I am through. The public library is one of those places nowadays that is worth it's money. and speaking of money Diz,, handling used books is no different really than is handling money.
