Should PORN be allowed at PUBLIC LIBRARIES?

Tell me what purpose does porn serve the public at large?

Absolutely none, to me. However, it's not for me to decide what someone else should be allowed to read. That said... so long as kids under 18 don't have access to it, because it's in a restricted area, what do you care?

Like you could have kept my testosterone filled body out of a restricted area in my mid teens, i would have found a way in.

All a kid today needs is a computer, and they can see all the porn they want, and they do. Hell they wouldn't NEED to sneak into the library for that. They take naked pictures of each other with their phones and pass them around. I'm afraid our youth have already been bombarded with porn by simply proxy of modern day electronics.

I do not think it is a wise investment of taxpayer money to purchase the full DVD of 2 Girls 1 Cup.

Like we have any control over where our money goes once it's yanked in large doses from our paychecks... :doubt:

I don't care to fund some jackasses drug addiction while he's sitting back collecting free money because he can't hold a job, but I'm forced to simply by working.

Now you're making me depressed...

I don't like Rammstein, so I didn't read that thread when it was posted....what makes you think I'd read it posted in a different thread? :D

And,the truth is often depressing...

Our library has unrestricted access and many of our high school kids hang out there and look at porn. Underaged kids are supposed to be prohibited but none of the machines are blocked. It's disgusting for senior citizens to have to walk by and see that stuff.
Why is it disgusting for seniors and not everyone else?

Good point. I just notice that the majority of people in the media section are either teens or seniors. And teachers like myself. I don't offend as easily, although I'll often mention that they could be doing homework instead. :eusa_whistle:

I suspect that if you offered a class called Porn 101, they'd all be scrambling for extra credit homework...

The threads are related, is all ;)

Any of you naysayers have a reason why not, since it's a "public" library, where you're supposed to be able to find any reading material you like?

For me it boils down to a matter of money. To the best of my knowledge, public libraries receive their funding through our taxpayer dollars. I don't think that money should be used to buy porn. Not to mention the fact that I do not buy porn for myself, so why should my tax dollars be spent buying porn for strangers? Then there is the issue of what type of porn should be bought? Who decides? What if a particular fetish is passed over? Lawsuits?

And this is why drug testing for people receiving government checks is a good idea.

And yet we don't do it. Why? A waste of taxpayer money? :eusa_whistle:

For that matter, why buy porn at all? I don't think anyone is capable of exhausting the supply of free porn available on the internet.

Very, very interesting debate taking place in Michigan:

eeekonomy.com/discussion/Should-Adult-Content-at-the-Library-be-Shelved-/62

Why not? Nobody's forcing you to pick it up. It should simply be in a section that's monitored by someone so that if you're under 18, you don't have access to that section.

because public libraries are tax payer funded. if taxpayers cannot have prayer in public places we shouldn't be forced to pay for pron either. It's just not fundamentally fair. Let pron lovers pay for their own vice. same as drinkers do. and smokers do.

Seems you're a bit behind in reading posts - taxpayer funds has already been covered.. You're fine paying for some druggies habit? No? You're forced to with every paycheck.

The seniors or the teens? My money's on both.

I'd have to vote no. Being of legal age doesn't mean that it's the responsibility of the public at large to have a copy of Wet Snatch on hand at the local library. When did libraries take the title of "Responsible for making all material available"anyway? Better yet, what other titles are REQUIRED to be on hand in any given library? Sounds like a community issue to me. Let the local governments decide what to stock in their library. If that means Small Town, Ia passes on a subscription to Beaver Hunt Mag while the public library in San Fran erects :)lol:) an entire floor dedicated to Dingdongs and man ass then so be it. The locals can respond to both however they want.

you are right, I don't take the time to read every response. Porn is one of those luxuries people should pay for on their own. and no I'm not fine with paying for druggies either. or illegals either. shit people we don't have money trees.

Don't get me wrong - I'm not all for it, either.. If I want a book, I go buy a book. I don't borrow one from the library...never know where it's been.

But, who decides what stupid shit we're forced to pay for, and what stupid shit should be banned...

I don't believe porn should be allowed at such an institution. However, I've read where conservatives want to ban the Color Purple and works by Tennesse Willilams and Truman Capote. They may not be able to distinquish the difference between liturature and porn. One has to wonder.

I would say that it is a "public" library because the public gets to say what they will allow to be there.

Additionally, the "public" library is usually funded in part by tax money...and most people would not want to pay for other people's pornography.

If it is a "private" library, that would be fine.

Why don't you change your post to more accurately reflect the truth? Let me help you:

"I've read where rabid right wing conservatives want to...."
