When I was on AOL boards a guy I got to know very well had it. He had been a chopper pilot in the Army and was very active in life. It reduced him to nothing. He passed about four years ago...I still have all his emails.

Yes it is. Two of my best friends died from it! They both went quickly.

My BIL went quickly according to how long it can take. He was my best friend, and it still hurts.
My mom died of Alzheimer's, which of course you lose your mind, BIL from ALS which you keep your mind, but you are trapped in a non functioning body. I do not know which is worse.
My mother (mentally) didn't know the difference. My BIL desperately did not want to die.
I didn't even know Sam Shepard had ALS.
