>> As the community mourns, a petition on Change.org to replace the Confederate monument in front of the Manatee County courthouse garnered more than 1,500 signatures in less than 24 hours.

The man who started the petition has a specific replacement in mind: A statue of Snooty the manatee.<<

Snooty (1948-2017) was a beloved figure in the town for decades. He was the oldest living manatee and the first born in captivity -- just passed his 69th birthday, a species that typically lives about ten years.

>> Pusateri created a petition to replace the Confederate monument in front of the courthouse with one of Snooty on Change.org on Sunday night after hearing the news of Snooty’s death. He said he also previously heard someone calling for the Confederate statue to be removed.

“Why not do two birds with one stone?” Pusateri thought.

So far, he’s seen more support than opposition, he said. The petition reached 1,700 signatures as of 4 p.m. Monday, according to the website. Some of the signatures, Pusateri said, have come from as far away as California.

“For a manatee as loved as he was in the community, it’s amazing to see the support,” he said.

Pusateri said when he gets 2,000 signatures, he will submit it for consideration by the city and the county.

“It’s the center of downtown, why not have a symbol of positivity?” Pusateri said. “Something everyone can get behind.” << (More including video at the link)

The existing Confederate monument, outside the county courthouse, was erected by the Daughters of the Confederacy in 1924. There had already been a movement to remove and/or replace it (story here) before Snooty's death. The current petition seeks to both memorialize Snooty and address the moving of the monument.

The existing Confederate monument, outside the county courthouse, was erected by the Daughters of the Confederacy in 1924.

Seven years earlier in 1917 the same organization attached a plaque to a building in Pulaski Tennessee, commemorating the founding in that building of the Ku Klux Klan in 1865. Reportedly they felt the town of Pulaski had not been given its due in the then-recent controversial film "Birth of a Nation". It listed the names of the six founders.

In the 1990s when a new owner bought the building, he turned the plaque around backward so that a blank side faces the public.

I like manatees as much as anyone but seriously, erect a statue of an animal born in captivity who lived in a public pool where people came to stare at him?

The CSA and its inveterate disregard of the notions of "liberty and justice for all" is irrevocably part of American history, a dolorous part. Accordingly, it does not deserve to be lionized before an institution that represents the very antithesis of one of the central philosophies for which the U.S. stands. Quite literally, sh*t in a can would be a better thing to mount there, AFAIC.

Piero Manzoni, Merda d’artista no. 19 (1961), est. $50,000-70,000. Yes. It is, in fact, a can of “Artist’s Shit.” Manzoni, an Italian conceptualist, fabricated a series of 90 such cans and sold each for the then-current price of gold.

But the Lorena Bobbit fantasy is kind of expected for She Who Cracks Whip in Riding Boots. :whip:

AGW supporters flying from Cali and renting a V8 SUV that gets 10 mpg from Enterprise to get rid of history. They like to do that.

"Ah, then you didn't go to the right places. :D"

I promised to be on my best behaviour, I stayed with very old friends of my family, my family and their families have been friends for more than 100 years.

We went sailing a lot and also had Cocktail Parties.

They took me to the Clambake Club a private Club which they are members of, which is in Middletown, Rhode Island, I think it originally opened in 1900, so I liked that place a lot.

Here it is:

Also The New York Yacht Club another private Club they are members of in Newport, Rhode Island, this is older I think it opened in 1846 or something, I'll have to have a look.

When the left has removed such a vital part of our history, what do they intend as a replacement? Is we still have slavery an option?
