Armed Right-Wing Militias Amassing Along Texas Border With State Lawmaker's Blessing | ThinkProgress

For much of the summer, right-wing militiamen have gathered near the Texas-Mexico border, many of them claiming that they are there as part of something called “Operation Secure Our Border.” They include members of a movement that President George W. Bush denounced as “vigilantes,” and they also include members of even more radical groups that promote wild conspiracy theories and that explicitly threaten violence against the government.

And now, they have the blessing of a sitting Texas lawmaker. After touring the Rio Grande Valley near the border, Republican state Rep. Doug Miller claimed that the militias “have a right to be there” and that they “are not currently a problem.” According to Miller, he was told that the militias “are on private property, helping ranchers and owners to keep illegals coming onto or through their property … and there haven’t been any problems.”

Miller is not the highest-ranking Texas official who has dismissed criticism of armed vigilantes patrolling the Texas border. Late last month, the 12 Democratic members of Texas’ congressional delegation penned a letter to Greg Abbott, the state’s attorney general and the Republican candidate to be Texas’ next governor. In it, the 12 lawmakers quote a militia leader who said that “You see an illegal. You point your gun dead at him, right between the eyes, and you say, ‘Get back across the border or you will be shot.’” They also ask Abbott to “denounce the actions of these militia groups and clarify the jurisdiction these militia groups have to patrol alongside local law enforcement and Border Patrol agents.”

A spokesperson for Abbott dismissed the letter as a “partisan political stunt.”

...

On his personal blog, Vanderboegh explained that one of the Three Percenter movement’s core beliefs is a willingness to offer violent resistance to the government:

We intend to maintain our God-given natural rights to liberty and property, and that means most especially the right to keep and bear arms. Thus, we are committed to the restoration of the Founders’ Republic, and are willing to fight, die and, if forced by any would-be oppressor, to kill in the defense of ourselves and the Constitution that we all took an oath to uphold against enemies foreign and domestic.

We are the people that the collectivists who now control the government should leave alone if they wish to continue unfettered oxygen consumption. We are the Three Percent. Attempt to further oppress us at your peril.

To put it bluntly, leave us the hell alone.

Or, if you feel froggy, go ahead AND WATCH WHAT HAPPENS.

How many will end up arrested for murder?

Remember the Great Big Secure Our Border operation that some Texas gun-humper militia guys were putting together to protect America from Guatemalan children? WELL! Turns out that the operation is maybe not going so well, and the group’s leader, “Commander” Chris “Threepercenter” Davis, has sort of disappeared himself from the interwebs. This development will surely come as a complete surprise to anyone who was impressed by such spectacular successes as the million-trucker rally and Operation American Spring, both of which paralyzed Washington DC and forced Barack Obama to resign.

Barbie Rogers, who runs the Patriots Information Hotline website that is helping to organize the operation, told the San Antonio Express-News that “Commander” Davis had to do a Dick Cheney “secure location” kind of thing because Saving America Is Serious Business:

“The commander (Davis) has gone black because of security threats,” said Barbie Rogers, founder of the Patriots Information Hotline, which offers 24-hour service and is helping the group organize.

Rogers, based in Arkansas, declined to detail the “threats” but said the militias have garnered “tons of interest” during the past three weeks. She said the hot line is averaging 97 calls per hour.

In other words, Davis has taken down his FacePlaceSpace page and his YouTube account, and cancelled interviews with Fox News and a wingnut podcast called the “Truth Broadcast Network,” (autoplay conspiracy-theory audio at link), possibly because of security threats from robotic assassins or Manchurian Candidates on the Fox staff. We’re betting Keith Ablow.

What could possibly go wrong?

Idiots.

so? we can't get Obama to protect us...so I guess you'll just to deal with them, amassing

Good.

Have the governor form them into a formal Texas State Militia, under command of the Governor, and beyond the control of the Federal military command structure.

Swear 'em in... screen their gun-carry licenses... give 'em a few hours of training in rules of confrontation, arrest, detention and use of force - nonlethal and lethal - and have 'em sign bidirectional hold-harmless agreements as volunteers.

Then turn 'em loose on the border, and have 'em check-in every so often, and when they're ready to stand down.

Then sit back and watch the fun begin.

Art. I, Sec. 8, clause 15 & 16; and clause 18 which many forget when they argue that the PPACA is not an authorized power of the Congress when viewed in context of clause 1 in the same Art. and Sec.

The Federal Government only controls that portion of a State Militia that is activated by the Fed through Congress. That would be the national Guard. Further any State is free to form their own separate militia, as some have done, that is separate from the Guard and not called up by the Federal Government. If Obama wants them under Federal Control he must ask Congress to do so.

If our duly elected government representatives are incapable or unwilling to protect our interests, it is incumbent upon us, the citizens, to see to protecting ourselves and our families.

The Federal Government enforces Federal Law, and the Immigration Law is Federal. Perry can use state police to enforce state laws, including the arrest and detention of aliens; but, his authority and the authority of county sheriffs and police chiefs to enforce Federal Immigration law is open to debate. See:

http://fas.org/sgp/crs/homesec/R41423.pdf

Putting non sworn personnel into the field to enforce immigration law seems at best risky, the deaths or injuries of aliens and militia members would put the State of Texas in jeopardy. By not providing the same or more intense training to 'militias' which sworn LEO's have is dumb. Perry might do so, given his lack of mental acuity.

Explain your comment, "Further any State is free to form their own separate militia" framed by Art. I, Sec 10, Clause 3

I would be inclined to just go ahead and kick Texas out of the union, instead of waiting for them to succeed, but then, I don't know what would happen to my source of bullshit for my rose garden.
