Tech firms let Russia probe software widely used by U.S. government

The practice potentially jeopardizes the security of computer networks in at least a dozen federal agencies,
U.S. lawmakers and security experts said. It involves more companies and a broader swath of the government than previously reported.

In order to sell in the Russian market, the tech companies let a Russian defense agency scour the inner workings, or source code, of some of their products. Russian authorities say the reviews are necessary to detect flaws that could be exploited by hackers.

But those same products protect some of the most sensitive areas of the U.S government, including the Pentagon, NASA, the State Department, the FBI and the intelligence community, against hacking by sophisticated cyber adversaries like Russia.

~at least seven other agencies, including the Office of the Director of National Intelligence and the State Department's intelligence unit, the review showed. Additionally, products made by SAP, Symantec and McAfee and reviewed by Russian authorities are used in at least eight agencies. Some agencies use more than one of the four products.

:eek-52::dunno:I knew before McAfee is a Russia Spying software for Putin.
But U.S. Based HP is sharing CODE with Russia? That seems to be
CODE that our nations secure computers/servers use? WTF? :cuckoo:

If the CODE was to run non internet connected devices, like a toasters,
sure Hack away Russia. But here, its server connected software FFS!?.
btw: Our HP Printers are internet connected, they can be hacked to send
copies of scans to anyone without YOU knowing this was done....Say like RUSSIA!,.

btw: This reads, access to CODE started back in 2014.
Why are they (HP), allowed to sell ANY Pentagon security software to ANYONE else?
Server CODE can be of the same Coding, but can be Coded as a separate Code with
other network access coding algorithms to access devices and software apps..

The DOPers invisible hand of the free market seems to be selling out America FFS!.
The GOP Controled House and Congress approved this access. Obama should
have issued an EO' at least to stop this. If he was informed about this. access.
I would think, any security software used by say our Gobmint would be off limits to Russia.

btw2: Seem they are testing if Russia can hack this CODE, that Is being currently
used now by our agencies.

Uh, from your article-

OPENING THE DOOR
Many of the Russian reviews have occurred since 2014, when U.S.-Russia relations plunged to new lows following Moscow’s annexation of Crimea. Western nations have accused Russia of sharply escalating its use of cyber attacks during that time, an allegation Moscow denies.

It was started under the former admin. And a Rep has stated the supply chain needs to be better secured, through legislation, to stop it.

Lamar Smith, the Republican chairman of the House Science, Space and Technology Committee, said legislation to better secure the federal cybersecurity supply chain was clearly needed.

Its part of all the Dubya 2006 upgrades contracts. So the software started from there
,now used. And they have loads of issue making it work.

"In 2006 the FBI awarded the new Sentinel contract to Lockheed Martin to deploy the system by 2009, but when cost concerns and other issues arose the FBI took over the final deployment and development of Sentinel. " HP in involved as a subcontractor.

HP is providing access, not the Gobmint to the CODE.
Claiming it's for testing? To see if Russia can hack it.
I can see a point. But the best hackers are not in Russia.

I wonder why any master system security CODE contracts did not
require any involved to tell our Gobmint about this sharing, first.
Or they have, and Gobmint not telling us so far. I would prefer
all Gobmint systems were using the file access systems that
require dedicated ROM hardware chip as keys, not just login
password alone.

For once Obama didn't lie. When he told the Russian guy to tell Putin to wait till after the election. That he would have more leeway. Wow.

The Upgrades to our current gobmint systems were ordered by Dubya.
The Contracts were awarded by congress GOP. Not Obama!
I'm fine with blaming Obama for things done by him when wrong etc..
This is not one.

The Dems from 2009-2010 were reviewing the original problems and current at time,
and worked to fix them and they did. With new Contracts. This is OWNED HP's software,
based on current coding used by our gobmint. HP is testing some newer CODE,
based on code being used by our Gobmint. Could be a fully new replacement.
The original CODE was approved and installed by the GOP. in a messy install.

The Dem spent more funds to fix the issue from 2009 on. This CODE is not
part of currently used. It's NEW! I'm sure if installed, Russia would get a copy
to hack later somehow with spies. That's why hardware chip based computers
are better. You need to build the hardware to run, test hack the software.
Which is truly harder to do. Plus the hardware-dependent software require two
chips. One on Server computer and one on devices for the software to work.
