The concept of nationhood is a human invention, so there is no such thing as a "country of its own" in any other sense. It is entirely relative. The statement is meaningless.

The word "Ukraine" (Ukraina) literally means "Borderland" and a borderland by definition can't be a country by its own. So yes, Ukraine is not, and never has been an actually independent country. Kievan Russia (Kievskaya Rus') was.

Anyone who describes Ukraine as free, democratic and independent is living in a self-contained separate reality coexisting with the real world in which Ukraine depends on Western handouts, has no elections, no free press and is directed by the Pentagon via their puppet dictator.
