Cycling is one of the most eco-friendly ways to travel, and thanks to this solar-powered bike lane that glows in the dark, it just got even moreso.

The luminous blue cycling strip, which can be found near Lidzbark Warminski in the north of Poland, was created by TPA Instytut Badań Technicznych Sp. z o.o. It’s made from a synthetic material that can give out light for up to ten hours at a time once charged by the sun throughout the day. Although the concept was inspired by Studio Roosegaarde’s Starry Night bike lane in the Netherlands, the technology is quite different as the Dutch version uses LEDs whereas this one is entirely dependent upon solar power. It’s still in the testing phase at the moment, but let’s hope that this bright idea will be implemented in other countries in the very near future.

Americans have become too spoiled and lazy to think up stuff like this.

Poland is about 1/8 the size of America with hundreds of thousands of miles of roadway less than what we have....but it is cool....just way too expensive to do here in any abundance....

Hate to tell you, but this is widely available. Check pinterest. The question, in America is, is this a responsiblity of government?

It does look nice though, and maybe we should push the safety aspect.

Don't get me wrong Angelo it is really cool...I ride my bike everyday....it maybe would be doable in certain areas of the outskirts of town....

I've been thinking about doing my patio like this for awhile now, but have never gotten around to it.

I'm solar-panelling the south-side of my roof this fall.
The water well pump is already running mostly solar.
As for the glow-in-the dark stuff - I can see it catching on in the beach resort areas out west and in Florida and up the coast.
....Wildwood NJ , Ocean City Md, Myrtle Beach ....the sky's the limit.

Really cool. Perhaps all bike paths as well as side walks should be lit like this.

The problem is that they only glow for a couple of hours. Think back to the vampire teeth you had as a kid,

The idea can be taken further by not having to rely on solar energy. Scaled down to the width of a bike-path strip (perhaps 14" wide) would be this piezo technology, and the strip could also be powered by pedestrians along the bike path.

I don't like it. We already have enough light pollution in the cities. The countryside should be dark at night, not lit up by bicycle paths.

This thread has a topic. Stick to it.

Even if the ground lights up, it being dark everywhere else doesn't change. How many people actually do any bike riding at night?

God bless you always!!!

Blessed as well, are atheist beliefs.

This technology will counter fossil-fuel consumption by producing electricity, not constantly taking it like a bulemic panhandler who never pays the earth back. With increased urban spread, these paths will be used 24-7 with forthcoming applications of security technology, and electric bike-charging stations will appear in the most unlikely of places such as Nebraska's route #30, which already has many miles of an entire paved lane that mostly goes unused. It will be possible to bike from Colorado to Wisconsin on solar-charged machines. One place to watch is the world-famous bike town, Gronigen, The Netherlands.
