The latest attempt by the Russians to launch a probe to the Martian moon, Phobos, will have failed to even get out of earth's orbit if they can't sort out the issue.

They admit that they have a lack of experience in their space industry.
Failure would be a major blow to the pride of Russia's space agency, which was crimped by budget constraints and a brain drain following the 1991 Soviet collapse and suffered a humiliating series of setbacks this year.

"They say there is hope to reset it, apparently it's a problem with the programming but there is very little time," the lead mission scientist Alexander Zakharov of the Space Research Institute told Reuters.

"I feel grief. It's very sad that this is how it all worked out but this is a consequence of our lack of people after such a big interval... Many young people worked on this. There is a lack of experience, we are working almost from scratch."

This sort of thing has surely got to be a concern for the US space program with their reliance on the Russians for transport.

You forget that these two are comrades. There probably is nothing Russia would be guilty of that the US is not also guilty of:

We are still trying to figure how to circumvent the Van Allen Belt with far more technology, and yet NASA tells us we crossed the Van Allen Belt some 40 years ago to the Moon. I, too, think "A Funny Thing Happened On The Way To The Moon."

I assume you mean that the US has had a few failures over the years as well?

That's true, but when you're relying on someone else that are essentially learning on the job you would be concerned.

Hey, aren't we depending on the Russians to supply the space station since Barry cancelled the Shuttle program?

the shuttle program was slated for cancellation under Bush, actually. It was time. it was old technology, and the shuttles themselves were getting old.

NO, because the Space Shuttle program was SCHEDULED to end. Had nothing to do with Obama and you know it, but prefer to LIE about it anyway!!! :eusa_hand:

Love how this became political after only a few posts.

If people are going to lie, they need to be called on it.
