    I'm all for 'smallest, possible numbers of troops and the voluntary military. With that said, there is a problem in so few of us having a direct relationship with actual soldiers, those we KNOW. I must say, I knew of no one personally who was serving in Vietnam at the time. One of my older cousins married a guy who had served, but I didn't know him at the time he was serving.

    Now I do know 5 of my own children's friends, that are in Iraq or Afghanistan. I don't know them well, but I know how worried their friends and family are. There is a connectedness that is missing for many:
