I haven't seen any articles in this energy section with respect to OTEC. Why not? Given that 258 billion barrels of oil energy equivalent is pumped by the sun into our planets oceans every day, why discuss photovoltiacs and other less feasable alternatives ( IMO ).

    Who might OTEC be?

NREL: Ocean Thermal Energy Conversion - What is Ocean Thermal Energy Conversion?

The economics of energy production today have delayed the financing of a permanent, continuously operating OTEC plant. However, OTEC is very promising as an alternative energy resource for tropical island communities that rely heavily on imported fuel. OTEC plants in these markets could provide islanders with much-needed power, as well as desalinated water and a variety of mariculture products.

World s largest OTEC power plant planned for China

Lockheed Martin has been getting its feet wet in the renewable energy game for some time. In the 1970s it helped build the world’s first successful floating Ocean Thermal Energy Conversion (OTEC) system that generated net power, and in 2009 it was awarded a contract to develop an OTEC pilot plant in Hawaii. That project has apparently been canceled but the company has now shifted its OTEC sights westward by teaming up with Hong Kong-based Reignwood Group to co-develop a pilot plant that will be built off the coast of southern China.

Interesting. And China may end up well ahead of us in this technology.

Certainly. Here are some of them, enjoying a warmer ocean, as opposed to frolicking on ice floes.

Dr Paul Curto, previously NASA chief technologist, wrote in OpEdNews on 12/15/2010:

"OTEC is a true triple threat against global warming. It is the only technology that acts to directly reduce the temperature of the ocean (it was estimated one degree Fahrenheit reduction every twenty years for 10,000 250 MWe plants in '77), eliminates carbon emissions, and increases carbon dioxide absorption (cooler water absorbs more CO2) at the same time. It generates fuel that is portable and efficient, electricity for coastal areas if it is moored, and possibly food from the nutrients brought up from the ocean floor. It creates jobs, perhaps millions of them, if it is the serious contender for the future multi-trillion-dollar energy economy."

Convert enough oil platforms in the Gulf of Mexico and it could prevent the next Katrina, etc.!
